We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Renée Darling. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Renée below.
Renée, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with what makes profitability in your industry a challenge – what would you say is the biggest challenge?
The biggest challenge to profitability in the art industry is definitely the unpredictability of market demand. Art is so subjective—what resonates with one person might not with another, making it tough to forecast sales. Plus, there’s a lot of competition out there, which can make it hard to stand out.
I also find pricing to be tricky. If I set my prices too high, I risk losing potential buyers, but pricing too low can undervalue my work. On top of that, the costs for materials and marketing can add up quickly. Economic downturns also play a role, as people often see art as a luxury in tough times. Navigating all these challenges requires creativity, flexibility, and a strong connection with my audience.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My artistic journey has been an adventure filled with constant growth and transformation. It all began in my childhood, where the gift of art was passed down through generations—from my grandmother to my mother, and now to me. I immersed myself in every creative outlet available throughout school, but it wasn’t until my senior year that I discovered my passion for photography. Capturing the world through a camera lens led me to earn an Associate in Applied Science in Photography from Colorado Mountain College in Glenwood Springs. Fast forward to 2024, and I find myself thriving as a visual mixed media painter.
In 2016, I realized it was time to formalize my art into a business. I registered with the state of Colorado, officially launching Renée Darling Art. While I continued to work at our family restaurant, my parents decided to retire and sell to new owners in 2022. For the next year and a half, I worked part-time at the restaurant. It was in May 2023 that I felt—and trusted—my true calling to pursue becoming a full-time artist; I genuinely believe a higher source was beckoning me from every direction.
As I approached May 2023, I found myself questioning my future: could I live with myself without trying? I’m sure you know the answer here. My parents who are all entrepreneurs, encouraged me every step of the way. I have a solid foundation, now give it a go. I chose to make the leap of faith and pursue my dream! I am forever grateful for the support, education, and personal growth that have accompanied me on this journey. The relationships I forged through my work at the restaurant have enriched my life and fueled my artistic vision. It was time to bid farewell to 20 years in the restaurant business and embrace my new adventure.
Now, as I reflect on the past year and a half, which to date us to October 2024, I am amazed at the milestones I’ve achieved. Just three months into my artistic journey in 2023, I submitted my work to a local artist call and was honored to win an award, leading to the publication of my art at The Holy Cross Abbey in Canon City, CO. This recognition not only validates my efforts but also deepens my connection to the community I cherish.
I proudly embrace the title of award-winning artist, a testament to the countless hours of dedication and passion I’ve poured into my craft. The unwavering love and support from my family and friends have been my bedrock. Their encouragement fuels my creativity and inspires me to push my boundaries. I believe that with every brushstroke, I create a gift of connection through art—something I hold dear. I am profoundly grateful for the opportunity to share my vision and my heart with the world.
Can you share one of your favorite marketing or sales stories?
In January 2024, I reached out to Kimberly with Goat Mowers Colorado, and by July, we were up and running with my first art licensing gig, finalizing all the behind-the-scenes production. The story began when I volunteered with Women Survivors of Cervical Cancer in Colorado Springs and learned that Goat Mowers needed assistance. I helped with fencing, feeding, herding, and even had the joy of holding a baby goat. Working with Kimberly and her goats was a special experience; these animals not only excel at mowing but also provide emotional support that these women truly deserve.
That day was about being part of something bigger—my art intertwined with my identity and purpose.
Now, Kimberly and Goat Mowers are featured on “Relax I Goat This” tote bags and “Snow White” prints, gifting artwork to customers as a thank you for their support in the journey toward environmental sustainability.
Reflecting on this journey a year later, I’m excited to share my licensed art pieces. If you’re looking to add creativity to your business products, I GOAT you, just as I did with Goat Mowers! :) Please reach out—I’m always open to creating and collaborating with businesses and individuals to bring visions to life.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Building my reputation in the market has been quite the journey, and I think several key factors have played a big role. First off, my passion for art really shines through in my work, which helps me connect with people on an emotional level. Thanks to my background in the service industry, I’m hardworking, personable, and often bring a bit of humor to the table. I’ve heard that many artists struggle with connecting, but I’ve found that my unique personality helps me stand out, both in my art and my interactions.
Community engagement is also huge for me. Volunteering with Women Survivors of Cervical Cancer taught me how powerful art can be as a tool for connection. Collaborating with businesses like Goat Mowers has expanded my reach and showcased what I can do. Plus, attending local art walks in Colorado Springs has helped me meet like-minded artists and build valuable relationships in the community. You never no who or what will feed you soul!
I always aim to deliver high-quality work that meets my clients’ expectations, and the support I get from family and friends has been a game-changer for my visibility. On top of that, I love sharing my journey and process on social media, which lets potential clients see my artistic vision firsthand. All these elements—authenticity, community involvement, collaboration, networking, quality, and a strong online presence—have come together to help me build a solid reputation in the market.
