We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rene Hernandez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Rene, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. The first dollar you earn in a new endeavor is always special. We’d love to hear about how you got your first client that wasn’t a friend or family.
My first client was a very good friend of mine named Spark who used to work with me at the restaurant. She called me one day to shoot her. She was the one who opened the door to fashion photography. Her fashion pictures went viral on my page and from then I haven’t looked back.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Rene Hernandez, I am a fashion photographer based in Miami. I have had the opportunity to work for amazing brands and magazines. I am truly passionate about my journey and my work. I love to craft every artistic detail of every picture. I come from Cuba so a lot of inspiration comes from my time living there. I try to transmit colors of my country in the retouching of my pictures. I have many projects and stories I am planning to create in the future for my audience.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
One of my biggest mentors during my journey that scaled my photography work from a small freelancing project to a six figure business is Lara Jade. Her course “the business side of fashion photography” I recommend to anyone that is in commercial/fashion photography that wants to start charging and leveling up their work. She really does a great job providing learners with the tools necessary to break into the industry,
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is to see people get inspired from my work. I get a lot of new photographers and even models messaging me about my photos and getting excited when I post on social media. That makes me extremely happy to see people taking that as muse to their own lives and creativity.
