We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Renata Vontobel. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Renata below.
Renata, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
For sure working in any creative industry requires talent but it also requires a lot of training and working on your craft. As a singer-songwriter and actress I have taken many courses and lessons to learn how to preperly work in those fields and to be prepared for the market. I took my first vocal lesson at the age of 8 years old and I enrolled at Musicians Institute at 19, where I have graduated in their vocal associate program and their independent artist program, where I further learned technique, music theory and business.
Later on at 23 I graduated in theater school and I have taken multiple courses in that field such as musical theater and acting for tv and film. All these experiences have taken me to a place where I feel confident in my craft and made me ready for job opportunities as a creative.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Renata Vontobel, aka REV, I am an independent artist, singer, songwriter and actress. From a very young age I knew I would love to persue an artistic career and follow my uncle’s footsteps in the music career, he is a multi-instrumentist and my mentor.
Alongside my uncle we wrote and produced my album “Strive” combining our music references, mine from early 2000’s and his from the 80’s which made it the perfect mix of rock and sugar tinged pop melodies creating an uplifting groove with fun lyrics to sing along to. You can hear my original songs on all streaming platforms.
Recently I have been focusing on my acting career. In 2021 I had my first movie role on “A Última Noite em Madame Bublitz” a Brazilian production about statues of famous celebrities that have come to life at a prestigious fictional wax museum. And since the past year I have been a part of multiple musical theater productions such as “What About Jazz?”, which celebrates Bob Fosse’s musical numbers, a version of the Broadway musical “School Of Rock”, in which I played the role of Rosalie Mullins and the musical play “La Casa de las Lloronas” which was based on Federico Lorca’s “La Casa de Bernarda Alba”.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My biggest goal as an artist is to bring joy and important messages through art to younger girls. I remember growing up I used to look up to Disney Channel starts and their shows, where there was always something we could take from each episode storyline or from song lyrics. I would love to be this role model to the younger generation.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Yes, so many! I would have loved to have known some courses I took earlier in my carrer, the tools I have learned throughout classes have completely changed my perspective about the industry. Musicians Institute was definitely a turning point for me in music, and a Brazilian school called Escola de Interpretação Machado Nascimento, in my hometown, is where I truly felt like I understook the acting world.
