We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Renata Vontobel. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Renata below.
Renata, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I have worked on many amazing projects throghout my artist career, but for sure writing, recording and releasing my album “Strive” was the most meaningful to me. Being able to tell my personal stories such as past relationships, dealing with mental health and being a Brazilian artist in the United States was so important to me. While creating and working on this personal project I had no idea on how the public would receive it and I am so greatful for the love and support I was blessed with after the release.
Renata, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Renata Vontobel, aka REV, I am an independent artist, singer, songwriter and actress. From a very young age I knew I would love to persue an artistic career but only at the age of 19 I was able to fully dedicate my time to study music at Musicians Institute in Hollywood. Since then I have worked on many projects on the music field.
My biggest inspirations when it comes to songwriting are late 2000’s pop artists such as Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus. The upbeat feel-good sounds that personified 1980’s teen pop songs also helped me further develop my own material that is an edgy mix of rock and sugar tinged pop melodies creating an uplifting groove with fun lyrics to sing along to. You can hear my original material on all streaming platforms, including my album “Strive”.
I have also taken the time in recent years to persue an acting career. In 2021 I had my first movie role on “A Última Noite em Madame Bublitz” a Brazilian production about statues of famous celebrities that have come to life at a prestigious fictional wax museum. And in the past year I have been a part of multiple musical theater productions such as “What About Jazz?”, which celebrates Bob Fosse’s musical numbers, a version of the Broadway musical “School Of Rock”, in which I played the role of Rosalie Mullins and the musical play “La Casa de las Lloronas” which was based on Federico Lorca’s “La Casa de Bernarda Alba”.
Have you ever had to pivot?
We all know the big impact 2020’s Covid-19 had in our lives and for me it wasn’t any different. I used to be an emerging artist in Los Angeles, where I used to live from 2017 until 2020, but because of the circumstances we were living on at the time I had to put my dreams and career on hold after the release of my album “Strive” and go back to my hometown Porto Alegre in the south of Brazil.
Since moving back home I have discovered a new passion which is acting, I wasn’t sure which direction to go to in terms of career, so in 2021 I started studying musical theater. Being able to add this ability to my artistic resumé has given me far more opportunities in the field.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I believe that to best support the creative minds you should start with supporting your local artists. Thinking about your own community is a great way to help lesser-known artists to thrive, A few ways you can do that is by going to their shows, buying their art and sharing their content online.
