We caught up with the brilliant and insightful RENA MAEDA a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

RENA, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about the best boss, mentor, or leader you’ve ever worked with.

The best boss I ever had was the salon owner I worked for when I first began my career as a makeup artist in Japan. Despite not being a hair and makeup artist herself, she was an exceptional business owner and an inspiring boss who made me want to work for her.

She always paid close attention to her employees’ well-being. During a period when I was struggling with family issues and feeling deeply depressed, she went above and beyond. One day, she asked me to join her for a drink after work and had made a reservation at a restaurant with a private booth to ensure I could comfortably express my feelings. She listened to me until the late hours, making sure I felt heard and understood. She even ensured I got home safely.

Understanding what motivates employees, she evaluated them fairly and raised their hourly wages based on their skills and performance. I still remember her words when she increased my hourly rate, ‘Money is definitely one of the top motivators. You’ve worked hard and your skills have improved. Keep up the great work.’

Not only was she an excellent boss, but she was also the first to arrive at the salon every day. She continues to be the person I aspire to become in my career.

“For those who might be new to my work as a bridal hair and makeup artist, I’d love to introduce myself. My journey into this industry was born out of a deep passion for enhancing the beauty and confidence of brides on their special day.

My love for the art of hair and makeup began early, and it eventually led me to specialize in bridal beauty. I’ve had the privilege of working with countless brides, helping them look and feel their absolute best as they walk down the aisle. I take great pride in offering a range of services, including bridal hair styling and makeup application, ensuring each bride’s unique vision becomes a reality.

One of the primary problems I aim to solve for my clients is the stress and uncertainty that often comes with preparing for a wedding. I work closely with brides to understand their preferences, provide expert guidance, and execute their desired look flawlessly, allowing them to relax and enjoy their special day.

What sets me apart from others is my unwavering commitment to delivering not just a beautiful transformation but an unforgettable experience. I take the time to build a personal connection with each client, ensuring their comfort and satisfaction every step of the way.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?

As a bridal hair and makeup artist, the most rewarding aspect of my creative journey is the ability to transform a bride’s vision into reality, making her feel the most beautiful and confident on her wedding day. The happiness and gratitude in her eyes when she looks in the mirror is an immensely fulfilling experience

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?

One of the most significant moments of pivoting in my career was when I decided to expand my bridal beauty services beyond traditional in-person consultations. The COVID-19 pandemic forced me to adapt to the changing landscape. I quickly shifted my focus to providing virtual consultations and tutorials, allowing me to continue serving brides and offering expert advice from the safety of their homes.
