We were lucky to catch up with Remy Dupree recently and have shared our conversation below.
Remy , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Parents play a huge role in our development as youngsters and sometimes that impact follows us into adulthood and into our lives and careers. Looking back, what’s something you think you parents did right?
Being the middle child you would think that I was “forgotten” or “unnoticed” I was the total opposite, because I was the busiest kid in the house. My parents( my mother and grandmother) always supported me in anything that I was involved in whether it was a dance recital , spelling bee, field day, awards ceremony etc. No matter what it was I could count on them to show up for me and that gave me confidence to always follow my dreams and put my ALL into whatever I’m doing.
Remy , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My family and friends know me as Arieon Duty, my clients know me as Remy and my music listeners know me as Xremx(the X’s are silent). I started doing hair at the age of 15, for my first 2 years I just did my sisters hair and a few girls/friends that I attended high school with but I wasn’t ready to tell everyone that I did hair until I hit 17 my junior year in high school. My clientele then started to grow slowly but surely around my neighborhood and then I started doing hair for some of the girls from my high school dance team that I (managed and coached). Even though I was serious about hair I attended college fall 2013 at “Texas Woman’s University” for Fashion Design and Merchandising where I quickly found out that I wanted to pursue a full time career as a hairstylist. After leaving college I came home and got my old job back and enrolled myself at “Ogle school of hair skin and nails” where i obtained my cosmetology license and deemed myself as “the silkpress king”. After graduation in 2015 I went full time with my career as a hairstylist and I started my business “The RemyTouch Salon” and my hair extension line “The RemyTouch Collection”. In my business I service textures of all sorts, services that I specialize in are Natural hair silk press, color and cut, hair extensions(sew-in, microlink, lace). Now in 2022 being behind the chair going on 8 years professional my clientele has grown tremendously and i serve as the healthy hairstylist for some of the biggest hair in Texas. Not only am I hairstylist I’m a therapist ,big brother, bonus uncle, bonus son, counselor, doctor. The hair industry has taken me places and put me in rooms that I’d never thought I see or be in, now today I am tapping back into my performing arts dreams as a music artist(rapper) under another alter-ego I created by the name of “Xremx”. I’ve always wanted to be apart of the music industry and have always had a passion for dancing, writing poetry and singing but never did I think that those passions would turn into a career as a rapper. Now with my first project “RatedXremx” being out and maintaining my hair career I find myself very busy now-a-days and my clients, family, friends, listeners have given me great feedback with my music and showing so much support.
Have you ever had to pivot?
When the Covid pandemic hit it was a very trying time for my business. I was forced to shut down my business for several months with no income or outside home human contact. Mentally I didn’t know what to do or how I was going to survive if I had to exhaust my funds in my savings account but I was blessed to budget and pay the bills until I was able to fully open the doors of my salon again. The pandemic taught me to really utilize saving, budgeting and having rainy day funds in place. For a while I thought I was going to have to walk away from my business and return to the workforce but I kept faith and my business is still thriving.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Growing up in the era that I came up in , social media Played a very big part in the lives of my generation. When i built the courage to share with the world that i was embracing my skills as a hairstylist all I did was start to post different styles that I did on my clients and sure enough other clients started to inquire about services and my audience and clientele grew from there. When I started taking music serious I used to write and sit in my car play beats and record my freestyles on camera. I posted my first freestyle and my peers thought it was just a hobby and then I started to get taken serious with my music when I recorded my first single “Remtalk” and recorded the music video for the single. So social media has been a very good outlet for me promoting my businesses and my endeavors, my social media presence kind of came natural for me.
