We recently connected with Remy Connor and have shared our conversation below.
Remy, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I was 13 years old and began to learn magic:
David Blaine’s first TV special just ended and I thought magic was cool. But it wasn’t until the next day when everyone was talking about it that I thought I would start to learn magic. I didn’t have any friends, so I figured that if I learned magic, I would make some friends. That did not exactly pan out, but I was starting to be recognized as the school magician which was kind of neat.
The following summer, I was invited to my family friend’s 40 business anniversary. Forced is a better term, I was still only 14 and had to go to all the family friend events. So there I was, sitting in the corner with my deck of cards practicing when a drunk partygoer saw me practicing and said “hey man, show me a trick.” I entertained him for 20 minutes and he gave me $40. I thought to myself “I’ll never work again!” That’s where my journey began. Magic became my everyday obsession. I was reading about magic all day, and if I wasn’t reading, I was performing. This was how I knew what I wanted to do.

Remy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Remy Connor, with the name “Inked Magician” as a moniker. I provide unique and personalized magic during private and public shows. The entire performance is a story about my life as a magician and the magic that exists in the world. It is my job, and responsibility to share these moments of impossibilities and create wonder within the eyes of an audience.
But to say my show is only about my story is misleading. By telling my story, it opens up spaces for my audiences to share their stories, because ultimately, that’s what magic is about. I want the people to get their chance to talk about themselves and their lives, share their stories and ultimately make it about them and the magic that can exist in their lives.
This includes personalized gifts and souvenirs for all guests who participate.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
At 19 years old, I had to make a very difficult choice. I had just dropped out of college to pursue magic full time (I went for the year to make the parents happy.) I had just moved in with a group of friends to a house. The garage was renovated for me to live there. It was exactly what a budding magician needed. I was applying for jobs when I was called back to audition for a TV show in LA called Phenomenon. I didn’t make it onto the show, but I was, for the first time, across the country. Seeing Los Angeles was absolutely incredible, especially being flown out there to meet and perform beside other magicians and mentalists.
But then, it was decided that being a magician was not the most honest way to make a living, so they kicked me out. I had three options:
Move back in with my parents, but it was an abusive household so that wasn’t going to happen.
Move in with other roommates, but I was just kicked out, so this was not going to happen
Move in by myself, but I was a 19 year old magician, I didn’t have the funds for that.
So in trying to figure out what to do, I took the only viable option, take a Greyhound bus to Vegas and figure it out.
I spent the next 2.5 years homeless, bussing around the country performing shows on the street, Booking restaurants, and essentially doing whatever it was I wanted.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of being an artist/creative is sharing that art with people. Nothing comes close to meeting a stranger and taking them out of whatever troubles and stresses they are going through and changing that mood. By sharing a moment of magic, we have the potential to change their lives forever in a positive way. Maybe it’s opening up a whole new world of magic, or more often, it’s a small moment that reminded them that their is more to the world than just the stress of paying their bills on time.
