We were lucky to catch up with Remi Roy recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Remi, thanks for joining us today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
I’m a self-proclaimed trier. I love to come up with ideas, execute, and launch things. The idea for my podcast started in 2016. It was called Follow Your Feet. I didn’t overthink or overanalyze it. I have a bias toward action; I just move. And that’s what I did. I gave it my best. About 7 months later, I realized I knew nothing about how to actually succeed at this new venture. I had no idea what success looked like. The storytelling, content-crafting part was easy. Even the technical aspects of recording and editing were a breeze, even though I’d never really done it before. What had me stumped was making it work. How do I get people to listen and come back for more? How do I find a community of people who were doing the same thing? How do I learn and grow?
I packed up that show after about a year. But I knew I would come back to it.
2024, I started The Driven Introvert podcast. This time, I had experience, wisdom, and some reasonable financial success from my other business. I knew what I didn’t know the last time.
The idea came to me as I launched a space for driven introverted women. Execution looked like real strategy: Defining who my audience is and figuring out how to reach them. Understanding what stories I wanted to tell and how they mattered to my community. Figuring out the best format and cadence for the show. Finding a supportive creator community to lean on (and this was key. I didn’t have it the first go around.)
So a lot of it was foundational content specific strategy that has set me up to not only create long-term but also have a definition of what success looks like.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Remi Roy. I’m an entrepreneur, Founder of Shepact.com, Host of The Driven Introvert podcast, and Founder of PodGround, a networking platform for new and intermediate podcasters (currently in development).
I’m passionate about helping introverts step out with courage so they can pursue their big ideas. I do this through the podcast, speaking, and mentorship.
I started the podcast because I’m passionate about creating a space for people like me who have the desire to live a fulfilled and impactful life, but have felt like they do not have what it takes or that the world doesn’t want or need someone like them.
I spent many years struggling because I saw my unique personality and approach to life as unsuitable for a life of purpose. I subscribed to the belief that if I couldn’t enter a room and steal the show, then I didn’t have what it took to be successful at anything.
I thought that confidence was only confidence if it was loud, and bold and announced itself at every turn. I have since learned that quiet confidence is confidence. This knowledge, along with painful experiences and several God-breathed evolutions in my life, has freed me to see life differently.
Now I know that the kind of life and work I want is possible, and I’m passionate about taking determined steps every day to walk in that reality. I can live fully alive, do life-giving work that I’m passionate about, and that makes a definite impact in the world, and get rewarded for said work. This is the trifecta I hope everyone out there can experience, no matter their personality or outlook on life.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I’m one of those people who has never been excited about doing one thing. I just love following my curiosity and trying things out. I love this outlook on life now, but for many years, I struggled with feelings of failure and a lack of direction.
We all know the tried and tested path. It’s linear. You pick a career, get a job, start a family, and …retire. Nothing wrong with this. For a long time, I really did try to figure out what my linear path could be, but it never happened.
What happened instead was that my passion and curiosity took me places.
From a customer service job to writing for and managing a magazine.
From the humid heat of Lagos to the sweltering summer heat of Texas.
From wondering how to pay Master’s Degree tuition to interning for a multinational cosmetics company.
From self-publishing three books to teaching writing workshops to aspiring authors.
From starting a business providing marketing design services to starting a podcast, and then falling in love with speaking and communicating.
From a painfully shy and anxious introvert to building confidence as I continue to figure out my next best thing.
From freelance creative to start-up founder.
And in between all that, dealing with anxiety about my future, infertility, and multiple miscarriages… the list is long.
Resilience doesn’t look like a trophy at the end of a 100m sprint. It’s a messy, chaotic decathlon, and expected outcomes are never guaranteed.
But for a fulfilling and purposeful life, it’s the only way.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
The book I always come back to is ‘The War of Art’ by Steven Pressfield.
It’s an easy read but packed with timeless truth that any creative, entrepreneur, or human needs to imbibe.
We all have things we’re meant to do. A purpose, a passion, an overarching mission that gives us fulfillment. But many of us do not and will not get there simply because we do not know how to overcome the resistance.
Resistance is the thing that will keep us from starting the thing, doing the thing, and sticking with the thing (whatever your thing is). It comes in many forms – doubt, fear, laziness, distractions etc.
Since I read that book, I now recognize resistance everywhere, from the fear that makes me question my experience and qualifications as I pursue a new idea to the distractions I allow to shift my focus from my one thing.
I highly recommend it!
