We recently connected with Remi Attia and have shared our conversation below.
Remi, appreciate you joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
I’ve been dreaming up starting my own business for years and my idea to start The Nosh Table really solidified in 2023 when I was constantly thinking about how my grandparents would react to the rise in antisemitism. My family has always taught me when met with darkness, always spread light.
Growing up in an Italian & Jewish family, everything revolved around the dinner table. Belly laughs over breaking bread, sharing stories over babka and bruschetta. My relatives were originally from Alexandria Egypt, and then moved to Sicily and are now spread out across Italy, Israel and the US. While I was cooking with my grandma in the kitchen from a young age, I began to uncover the stories of our ancestors and the resilience they developed to survive. Throughout my family’s journey migrating from place to place, they continued to pass down recipes and traditions that have lasted for hundreds of years.
Some of my favorite memories are of cooking with my grandma as she blended Italian and Middle Eastern recipes throwing spices into the pot without measuring. Every Friday she invited friends, family and neighbors over for Shabbat and having that ritual taught me that breaking bread had the power to spread light even in the most challenging times.
Cooking quickly became my love language and influenced my path to lead a career in hospitality. After studying Hotel Management at Cornell University, I worked as a consultant and designer for luxury hotels and found a passion for creating memorable experiences. After several years working for international brands, I had been dreaming up starting my own business on the side. Then in 2023 everything became clear. I started The Nosh Table to spread light and spark joy around the Jewish and Italian cultures at a time when there were a lot of misconceptions about the Jewish heritage.
The Nosh Table products I have designed are colorful, playful and meant to inspire people to come together and nosh. The design for the Swirl Seder Plate came to be after realizing I couldn’t find a seder plate that brightened up the holiday. The process I used for developing this product started by using watercolor paints to create a swirl pattern that is then printed on a shiny acrylic platter with a 3D Star of David in the center. It’s the type of Seder Plate you can and will want to use all year round. The Nosh Table linens feature a combination of Italian and Yiddish sayings on them inspired by the hilarious jokes my grandma used to make the language I grew up with.
The Nosh Table is all about adding chutzpah to your table, with exciting Judaica that you want to show off and playful dinnerware that will make you want to nosh all night long.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Throughout my career, I have always led with the belief that every detail tells a compelling story, whether told through the language of design, architecture, or cuisine. I launched a new brand called The Nosh Table aimed to add chutzpah to your table with dinnerware and accessories that dance with the stories of Jewish and Italian family traditions.
Prior to launching The Nosh Table, I worked as a consultant and designer for international luxury hotel brands. I studied Hospitality Business Management at Cornell University and Interior Design at Parsons. I then went on to become a Certified Gelato Chef and studied at Carpigiani University in Bologna Italy to launch a gelato brand in Los Angeles, Capri Gelato. During my career I have collaborated with international brands including The Leading Hotels of the World, Montage Hotels & Resorts, and Marriott. My work has been featured in media outlets such as the Food Network and I have orchestrated events at The Golden Globe Awards.
Throughout my career I have enjoyed collaborating with other business owners I am proud to have received San Francisco’s Community Impact Award for championing women-owned food businesses across the Bay Area.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Right before launching The Nosh Table, I was met with resistance from people around me about starting a brand with a Jewish and Italian focus. There was a lot of fear around my safety because of the rise in antisemitism and extreme online hate and threats fellow Jewish business owners were receiving. After months of grappling with whether or not to start this business, I decided to not let fear drive my decisions because I was reminded by my family’s resilience. Every generation of my family has had to deal with either having to move countries because they were Jewish, getting denied jobs because they were Jewish, or not being allowed to join certain communities because they were Jewish.
The Nosh Table is for everyone that has been faced with hardship and wants to come out on the other side. Nosh is meant to be shared, so I designed products that products that spark joy and inspire you to gather with your friends and family.
Can you share one of your favorite marketing or sales stories?
While I have been growing The Nosh Table, the most unexpected and biggest blessing I have encountered is partnering with fellow female business owners. The first day I launched The Nosh Table, my mom was my first customer. It felt like there were crickets when my website went live and at times it feels lonely when launching a business on your own. Then I started to connect with other women owned businesses on social media and my initial direct to sales strategy completely shifted. Instead of trying to reach customers solely on my own, I started to collaborate with incredible female founders and design giveaways and create custom products with them. Instead of marketing my business on my own, I had a team of strong women behind me and we all worked together to boost each others’ brands.
