We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rekia Beverly a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Rekia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
The story behind my mission is to share learning and love with the world. The motto behind my brand is simple, it is to “Keep Learning and Loving.” For the the little one trying to learn how to tie their shoelaces or how to walk, to the eldest member of the family trying to learn how to use a mobile device or how to use the tap feature at the card reader, there’s always something to learn. When it’s time to love, it’s a reminder to keep loving what you do as your occupation and loving your circle, the people who love you.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am an alumna of Florida A&M University and NOVA Southeastern University. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from FAMU and a Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction from NOVA. I am an accomplished teacher, author, and entrepreneur that has made a name for myself with my Mrs. Ashbury book series. My teaching career started right after college. While reading to my students one day, I had a realization that none of the books I read talked about the teacher or how we felt. This led me to create the Mrs. Ashbury book series, which represents teachers as positive and welcoming figures in the lives of their students. Mrs. Ashbury’s character is inspired by my experiences as a teacher, and my books are meant to empower students and educators. My series is unique in that it features a black woman as the main character, making me the first African-American woman to achieve this feat. In addition to my teaching career, I am also an entrepreneur and founder of my own business. I include teachable books in my series to encourage lifelong learning and to promote a positive view of teachers in the world. My accomplishments in education, entrepreneurship, and literature are a testament to my dedication and hard work. I will continuously impact my field and continue to inspire others with my work.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
If you were to ask any parent of a student that I’ve taught, they will tell you we are a family. I believe in relationships! In any field of work, relationships matter. You won’t just find me having relationships within my school family, but within my church and community also. This business has now extended my relationships by meeting people on social media that I’ve influenced. There’s a sense of responsibility associated with upholding a valuable and honest reputation that matches your brand online and in person.

How did you build your audience on social media?
My advice for those wanting to start building their social media presence is to, start posting! If. you were to take a look at my Instagram page and scroll all the way to bottom, you will notice I didn’t have a clue what I was doing. The most important lesson from this is, I started somewhere and I don’t have any regrets about it. I learned as I posted. Now, I’m on all social media platforms and I’ve learned how to navigate ads, scheduled posts, and creating my own content.
