We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Reketta Brown. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Reketta below.
Reketta, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about the best advice you’ve ever given to a client? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
The best advice I ever gave a client is to focus on what they can control. A client shared they felt powerless in a situation that was happening in their life. This feeling caused the client to experience constant anxiety, worry, and fear that consumed their life several times a week. The client didn’t like the way this made them feel because it impacted them as well as their relationships. I assisted the client with developing a plan of reframing their thoughts when they started to feel powerless within this situation. I worked with them to focus on the positive things that were happening in their life versus what they couldn’t control. By assisting the client with identifying the thoughts that caused them to feel powerless they were able to regain a sense of control over their life. They were able to benefit from this advice through improved their mental wellness and overall emotional well being. They were able to feel powerful versus powerless and it changed the way they looked at the situation. The client shared their transformation and how it impacted their life and caused them to be a better person.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I would love to share about who I am and what I’m passionate about. I’m Reketta, a compassionate thought leader, author, entrepreneur, and self care coach. I take joy in helping others becoming the best version of themselves by teaching them simple but impactful strategies to care for themselves daily. I have a master’s in Rehabilitation Counseling from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and provided professional counseling services for over 15 years to diverse individuals to improve their emotional well being. I’ve had the pleasure to travel nationally and internationally to share hope and empower others to heal and become resilient. With my knowledge, skills, professional and personal experience I’ve created wellness tools such as journals, affirmation cards and coaching programs to empower others to practice self care daily. The well being of others is important to me.
I live with intention and purpose. I’m grateful I’m able teach others through coaching and professional development how to practice self care daily with intention to enhance and maintain their emotional well being. I help my clients with a variety of challenges including, stress management, mental health support, burnout recovery, goal setting, and work life balance. What sets me apart from others is my skill set of being nonjudgmental, the ability to build relationship, and meeting my clients where they are.
I curated a few programs and tools to assist with well being. I authored and created a wellness journal, Write to Heal 30 Days to Healing and Self Discovery with Reflection and Journaling, where individuals can write their thoughts and be encouraged with positive daily affirmations along the way. Journaling can be an effective tool to help with processing emotions and managing stress. Write to Heal can be found on amazon or you can get a personal signed copy by visiting my website at www.writetohealbook.com. In addition, I have a 6 week coaching program, RestoreHer, a self-care coaching program for women on a journey to improve their emotional well-being, find balance, and embrace the transformative power of self-care. More information on the program can be found at restoreher.thinkific.com.
I am most proud of doing the work to establish myself as a trusted professional in my community to help others navigate life challenges. I’m an advocate and champion for mental health, equitable services, and will continue to be a servant leader.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
If I could go back I would choose my same profession in counseling and behavioral healthcare again. Through this work, I’ve been able to learn so much about myself through the years. This profession has taught me the importance of being culturally competent and responsive to those I serve. Our mental health is an important of who we are and how we show up. Everyone has a story and it’s important that individuals can feel empowered to use their voice to bring change to their own mental health. I have enjoyed being able to meet and work with diverse individuals throughout my career.
Any advice for managing a team?
I’ve managed a team for over 15 years in various capacities and sectors. Managing a team effectively comes with a combination of leadership, communication, and organizational skills. As a leader, one must understand that each person on your team is different. It’s important not to compare your team members, but determine how build a cohesive team where everyone feels important, heard, and seen. This can be done through clear communication, with ensuring that the team understands their roles, goals, and what they are working towards. Allowing space for feedback and checking in can help with morale.
Empowering your team, is another important leadership skills, through empowerment you trust your team to make decisions and take ownership of their tasks. As a leader you can provide them with the resources and support they need to succeed. Lead by example, as a leader you want to demonstrate the behavior and work ethic you expect from your team. Your actions set the tone for the team’s culture and performance. Encourage professional development, this shows that you are invested in your team member’s growth professionally by allowing them opportunities for training, career advancement, and skill development. Adaptability and flexibility can show that you are open to change and willing to adapt your management style as needed. Flexibility can help you better meet the needs of your team and organization which can promote and maintain high morale.
These strategies and solutions can make managing your team more effective, maintain high morale, and improve the well being of your team.
