We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Reina Mora. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Reina below.
Reina , appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Every summer since I was born I would go to Puerto Rico to visit my family. I mainly stayed at my grandparents home and my grandfather was the catalyst of my love for songwriting. He would play guitar as I’d sing and make up songs with him. It was something that lifted my spirit whenever I struggled to fit into two very different worlds. I wrote my first song alone when I was 8 years old and never lost the urge to quit. It’s my therapy, my outlet which allows me to say things I wouldn’t have the guts to say out loud. Sometimes I write songs and have different realizations/epiphanies about myself, the world or my outlook on life.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
First and foremost, I am Puerto Rican. My heritage plays a large part in my identity. From the music I grew up with, the songs I write, and even the alcohol I drink. I am a singer/songwriter who brings my unique upbringing and point of view, both to my music as well as the music I write with other talented artists. I would like to think that I craft songs that speak to the universal truths that we all share. I have been singing since I was a child, and have made it a career for the last 20 years.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I have recently discovered some amazing communities of writers, musicians and creatives that are there to inspire, support, and push each other. From the deep well of experience that SONA (Songwriters of North America) brings to their members, to the young, hungry creatives of LASC (Los Angeles Songwriter Collective) and the female empowerment represented by Write Girl. I have come across groups that show the diversity of talent this industry has to offer. Each of these groups has offered me a home, a family of fellow songwriters, and friends that I will have for life. I am honored to be a member of all of them and to help out each of them in any way I can. I hope that we can inspire the next generation of songwriters and make sure they don’t feel alone in the difficult journey.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
As much as I love the energy that is given back to me when I am performing on stage, I feel that the look on a fellow artist’s face when I help them put their thoughts and feelings into words is the most rewarding. As a creative, it is our aspiration to inspire others and when I have the opportunity to help a fellow creative achieve their dream, I know I’ve achieved mine. This is a big world, and there is more than enough room for all of us to achieve our dreams.
