Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Reina Luna. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Reina , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I wouldn’t say I’m a big risk taker but when I look back I remember all the risks I was willing to take to have the life I wanted. For example after high school I had no idea what I wanted to do my first option was to move to Seattle and pursue my graphic design career (I had a full ride scholarship). Ultimately I decided against this decision as it sounded too fast paced for my liking. Then I decide to enroll in community college for photography and 2 months before that started I withdrew my enrollment and joined the Denver School Of Massage Therapy. Best risk I ever took.
Reina , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I graduated from The Denver School Of Massage Therapy in 2018. After that I got my first job at a spa I worked there for about 9 months and then decided it was no longer the right fit. I then traveled to Thailand by myself all at the age of 19. I stayed with monks for a couple weeks and explored different cities. Once I came back to the states I felt very lost in my career. I knew I didn’t want to work for anyone again but I was too afraid to go for it. So I ended up becoming an independent contractor with a local massage business I worked there for 2 years. Finally I jumped into starting my own private practice Golden Wellness Massage. I started my practice back in 2020 right before we all had to shut down from the pandemic. Thankfully it’s all worked out and I have my loyal patients.
I absolutely love the work that I do. I never knew I would be able to love my job and I’m living it now!
My massage style is a mixture of relaxing and not so relaxing haha. I only say that because I like to work on everyone’s needs and that means different techniques and styles. One of my favorite modalities is myofascial release. This is not the most relaxing feeling because it’s taking your skin and manipulating it to release but afterwards it’s worth it. Reiki healing has also become one of my favorite modalities which is one of the most relaxing that I’ve experienced. It’s like drifting into a different realm where you’re not quite awake or asleep.
My massage is unique because I try my best to really be with my clients on a deeper level. This means really listening to their bodies needs and providing an environment where they feel comfortable enough to let go.
I also love to trade with other massage therapist at least once a week. This allows me to fall in love with massage all over again because I receive I get to remember how it all feels plus I get to learn new tips and tricks. I met one of my good friends Joel at the office I work in now. He has not only been a great friend but also took the roll of teaching me Reiki and emotional release. I am truly honored to have him as a friend and teacher.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Honestly I’d have to say it’s the experience I provided each time. Every single time a patient comes in I make sure they know that the session is all about them and their needs. I make sure to set the ambiance of course with having the massage bed made, playing relaxing music, lighting a candle and I offer free aromatherapy. I cannot take all the credit of course a big component to my business reputation has come from the fantastic patient reviews. Reviews are very powerful especially for a small business.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
This might be obvious but I believe what’s most helpful in succeeding in Massage therapy is the ability to fully be present with your patients. I don’t just mean physically be attentive but also emotionally and mentally. Having that connection with someone will do miracles. For example if someone comes in and their very upset or stressed I will offer to help them go through those emotions in hopes of letting it go this isn’t hard to do and it really works! Another example would be if I know my patient is struggling financially I will often offer to discount our session if it can help them receive the care that they need.
