We recently connected with Reginald Cummings and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Reginald thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the story behind how you got your first job in field that you currently practice in.
I received my first client through word of mouth. I was in the gym working out with a few of my friends and a parent saw us and asked if I would train her son. After that first engagement I began training her son and 2 of his friends.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Reggie Cummings but my family calls me Bj. I have been an athlete my whole life and my goal has always been to help others. I was able to play high school basketball and given an opportunity to play college basketball. After college I was blessed with opportunities to play basketball and get paid for my services. Throughout the process my only secret sauce was being able to learn the fundamentals of basketball and basics of working hard which always carried me in other areas of my life. I was able to get into the training industry after coaching at the boys and girls club. A few of the parents saw the passion I had for youth and asked if I would work with their kids and the love for training grew. I started as an assistant coach with several AAU programs and blossomed into a head coach and skills trainer.
After Swoops Hoops was started we began to offer several types of training and skill development. We offer one on one training, group training, basketball camps, speed and agility training, and mentorship sessions.
The problems we solve first are developing the youths mindset and allowing them to believe in themselves. We give them good people to look up to and also provide them with the skills they need to be successful in life and in the game of basketball.
What sets us apart is our attention to detail of each individual client. We do not offer any cookie cutter programs but no player is the same. Our main focus is on the fundamentals of the game and starting with those skills as building blocks.
I am most proud of seeing the youth that we train going on to college and coming back to serve those under them. Our brand is built on serving and providing quality training while having fun. We seek to serve youth ages 5 – 17 and have them fall in love with the process of getting better everyday.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe my consistency and love for each kid that is entrusted to me helped build my reputation. I did not do a lot of marketing to build my reputation it was mostly word of mouth. We believe the work will always show and the results followed. I started training and coaching for free and my prices have stayed affordable throughout the process which has also helped me grow within the community.

Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
If I could go back I would choose this profession every time. The only difference is I would have started earlier so I could have impacted more lives and keep more kids off the streets and in the gym.
