We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Regina Starks. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Regina below.
Hi Regina, thanks for joining us today. Parents play a huge role in our development as youngsters and sometimes that impact follows us into adulthood and into our lives and careers. Looking back, what’s something you think you parents did right?
My parents did so many things right. What I didn’t understand as a kid was their strictness but as an adult, I appreciate it all. I have been blessed to see 41 years of their 45-year marriage until the passing of my dad in October 2019 and they have always been my greatest example of unconditional love. They taught me the importance of family, hard work, Christian beliefs and values, all things that I hold true and continue to incorporate into my personal and business life. Developing an entrepreneurial mindset at a very early age, my parents have always been my biggest supporter. From selling Avon, life insurance, real estate to becoming a travel agent, climbing the corporate ladder and eventually opening a women’s shoe store; my parents allowed me to make mistakes, motivated me with each failed venture and allowed me to learn and grown in my life’s journey into discovering my true niche. Lasty, in the words of my mother, “baby, you can do anything you put your mind to,” these words always ring in my ears as a constant reminder that nothing is impossible, if I want it, I can have it so I go get it.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am an entrepreneur with multiple businesses and passionate about helping others. I am the owner of a women’s shoe store, certified life coach, corporate leader, real estate investor, certified yoga & meditation instructor, and Domestic violence advocate. As a compassionate business owner, it brings me great joy to be able to share with others my experiences as well as challenges to assist them in their own business and personal endeavors. Majority of my time is spent providing coaching services that include but not limited to, Career Development (career change, performance/Growth, Communication skills and/or Leadership development) or Life Enrichment (Overcoming a fear, igniting your passions, getting unstuck, Strengthening Relationships, recovering from sibling loss, and/or Personal development). I want people to know that I am a motivated individual with a determination to succeed. I lead with integrity, and it flows through all my businesses while helping others live their best life.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
December 2008, I founded the company, Shoe Therapy. After 2 years of building my brand, I opened my 1st store front location in March 2010 and the 2nd location opened in September 2012. My pivot in business came when I had to face one of the biggest obstacles as an entrepreneur and that was facing the reality of having to close the doors to my store front businesses. Although devastated and discouraged, I quickly changed my mind set and realized that sometimes you have to step back in order to move forward and in the business industry it was no different. I closed the doors, reassessed my business finances and made the decision to move my women’s shoe store online. This has truly been one of the best business decisions I have ever made as I no longer have the overhead and employee salary cost and I currently able to assist women with their fashion choices all over the world.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
As an entrepreneurial I have done just about everything seeking new clients/customers. This includes vendor events, moonlighting at lounges, partnering with local boutiques and domestic violence shelters, social media advertising to appearing on radio stations as well as the local news programs. Not to sound cliche, but word of mouth will always be the best source of new clients as all of my coaching clients have been referred to me by word of mouth.
