We recently connected with Reggie Singleton and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Reggie , thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
It was in my 3rd year of college. I was flunking out of the classes related to my chosen major (Electrical Engineering), and reached a point where I wanted to study something I actually loved. I always did Art when I was younger, but never thought it was serious enough to be pursued as a career path. At this stage in my life, I wanted to be happy, as well as get passing grades. I took a course entitled Drawing 101 and was introduced to the structure of Art. The instructor was a professional artist himself and very serious about his craft. With this course, I received my first A grade. It was at this moment I knew the Art world was where I was supposed to be. I haven’t looked back since.
Reggie , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Reggie Singleton. I am a painter and sculptor from Detroit, Michigan. I began to pursue art at Wayne State University, pursuing a Bachelors of Fine Arts and majoring in Painting. I left school after 2 years and began to train myself in the style of Art I use today. My business is Reggie Singleton Studios and I make Fine Art. My main clientele is Art Collectors, new and old. I am an innovator of Art. Each piece I make is one of a kind, and I feel my Collectors appreciate this. The thing I’m most proud of is in 2017, six of my sculptures were purchased by Wayne State’s Bio-Engineering department to be apart of their permanent Collection. They are on display in the lobby area.
I feel it is important for my present and future collectors to know am committed to growing myself as an artist and increasing the value of the work they have and the work I will produce in the future.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Producing work that garners the respect of your peers and collectors alike. To be a prolific artist, you must be innovative in your craft and honest about the subject matter you pursue in your work. When your message is recognized and you receive accolades, that is very rewarding to an artist.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Many non-creatives I know, not only don’t understand why I create art, they also don’t understand why collectors buy art. So their ignorance of the art world is two-fold. I’ve had to explain my vision and why my business would be profitable. One supply’s the vision, the other supports the vision.
