We were lucky to catch up with Regan Rouse recently and have shared our conversation below.
Regan , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
I have been active in the photography industry as a portrait photographer for 18 years. My mission has always been to find a way to support my clients and tell their stories through creative imagery. In 2022 I also began a personal documentary project centered around perinatal mental health. Through creative still photography and video, I created a platform to educate, offer resources, and open the important conversations around what needs are not being met before and during the postpartum chapter.
With this special project, I hope to broaden the expanse of this difficult topic by creating something beautiful and honest as a way to continue the depth and connection that has always driven me in my work.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Regan Rouse, formerly known as Seraphim Fire Photography. Now I have simplified by shifting to Regan Rouse Photography after carving out a special place for myself in Denver over the years. I am a creative portrait and documentary photographer working with families, couples, and small businesses to make photos and videos that tell their story in an honest and heartfelt way. I particularly love working with other women; celebrating their wins and documenting their growth in business, and in motherhood.
Over the years, I have created some remarkable connections without adhering to a particular niche, but rather by relying on my relationships, word of mouth, and my own unique style.
Moving forward, I hope to cultivate sessions that take more of a journalistic approach, more time to connect (particularly with kiddos), showing a richer, more flushed out perspective of everyday life in motherhood, partnerships, artistic endeavors, and small business.
How did you build your audience on social media?
This is a funny thing for me to touch on considering I don’t have a terribly robust social media following. What I do have is a healthy amount of real humans following me as I work through what inspires me inside of an ever changing environment, It feels like “old school” creating by way of experimentation. I won’t lie, I would love to have a larger following, but I know that I am touching people with my content by remaining genuine and adventurous. Forget about the trends. Just make what you love. The right people will find you, and the connections won’t feel empty. It becomes fun again.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I started out as a film photographer, which made me so impassioned in the experimental nature of photography. I shot through the Pinterest trend era, the overly posed, and even now the filters and A.I. threaten to boil down our creative freedom; It can feel like a very special kind of burn out. The lesson that I learn every few years is to allow for adaptation, but to revisit what made me fall in love in the first place. I first worked in the fashion industry and loved the wild, ridiculous concepts so in some ways I try to tie those kinds of things into regular family sessions or branding. So much of our art is also what we dream of seeing.
