We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Reeqo Star. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Reeqo below.
Alright, Reeqo thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
DMX once said, “ To live is to suffer, but to survive, is to find meaning in the suffering”. The projects I create typically fall within 2 categories. Documented Suffering with Meaning, and Expressive Art. In 2019 I released an album titled “Pain for Champagne”, this album was a project comprised of my reflections on my life, with the hope that the listener would relate to it. This was prior to me seeking therapy and prior to me finding a sound I’m comfortable with, it meant a lot at the time but looking back it was only a stepping stone. In 2020 I released 5 albums, one of which was “Botanical Bounce”, that album was a genre-bending soundscape filled with songs that were purely artistic expression, such was also the case with “Vallefornia” and “Brunch Off Saks 5th” the former being a Westcoast inspired concept album and the latter being an east coast inspired album.
This past December I released “Champagne Taste, Beer Money”, which I believe is the first project perfectly comprised of both. The backstory to “CTBM” isn’t really deep. Honestly, the simplest way I can put it is simply an album that picks up where I left off with “Pain for Champagne” and applies things I had learned along the way. It is because of this that I believe that my latest effort is the purest reflection of my growth as a human and as a hip hop artist.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m an artist, and to be honest, I feel that this creates more problems than it solves, but it is all perspective. At the end of the day, I feel it is an artist’s job to document the present in a way that allows the listener to reflect on the past or envision a future.
Every single album I do is self-produced, this is not by choice but rather a circumstance of networking and economics. The main problem is most often, the budget. I would love nothing more than to focus on creating and let trusted individuals handle the marketing, the promotion, and the footwork, but this is not my current reality. I create and I enjoy challenging myself as a producer as well as a writer, and I feel I bring a lot to the table that could benefit any individual with talent and an open mind.
I am most proud of my ability to get better and grow, no one could ever say my first album is my best.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The mission is to create value, not just in the simple monetary sense but in the essence of having my presence, input, thoughts, contributions, and energy wanted and needed. I’m sure all artists want their works to build them wealth, I am no different, but what I truly desire is to have value, something that is worth the price but at the same time its worth is immeasurable.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Honestly, I am still building and I am thankful for every follower I get because each follower brings me one step closer to a higher value in some sense. I’m not the biggest fan of my life being more meaningful or interesting than my art, this is because my art isn’t the most determining factor in the lifestyle I live, so unfortunately I struggle with the make-believe aspect that peacocks throughout social media. I get it, as entertainers, we have to entertain so I’m just going to keep searching for a niche that works.
