We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Reena Tolentino a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Reena , appreciate you joining us today. Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?
Receiving my first payment for a painting I created marked an indelible moment. Not only did I successfully sell my artwork, but I also managed to secure a higher price point than my well-established painters. This achievement instilled a profound sense of confidence in my creative abilities. Concurrently, I was taken aback by the emotional odyssey that defined the creation of that particular piece. One of my dedicated collectors discerned the profound emotional depth encapsulated within my work. This connection transcended mere monetary value; it was a meaningful human exchange. It meant the world to me that someone not only perceived the emotional intricacies in my painting but also felt an immediate desire to own it.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I transitioned from a full-time career in acting and music to pursue a full-time role as a Contemporary painter and artist. My work extends beyond the blank cloth canvas; I license my intellectual property to diverse platforms and brands, crafting unique logos to bolster their brand identity. I’m also deeply involved in the formulation of immersive art experiences and international collaboration with our Partners and curation of art exhibitions. Amidst these artistic pursuits, I’ve embarked on a unique journey as an analog astronaut.
My entry into analog astronaut training began as a content producer for MMAARS [Mars- Moon Astronautical Analog Research Science] where my multifaceted skills were discovered. I painted an Astronaut trilogy series for the International Astronautical Conference [IAC] in Bremen, Germany, and University of Cambridge, establishing my presence in the analog astronaut community and doing activations where I have the Astronauts paint blindfolded, having to utilize their other 7 senses. I’ve since taken on the role of fostering astronauts’ astro-wellness programs and mental well-being in isolated, confined environments. I’m known as the “Crew ARTRONAUT,” bridging the gap between art, technology, investors, brands, and industry influencers.

Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
I believe NFTs hold immense potential for artists seeking true ownership of their intellectual property. Leveraging blockchain technology, NFTs offer a robust mechanism for transparent and immutable tracking. In essence, NFTs can be a game-changer, provided that the underlying smart contract is executed correctly. The synergy between artists and NFTs not only empowers creators with control over their works but also introduces a new era of authenticity and provenance in the digital art realm and physical.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Engaging in analog astronaut training since 2017 has been a pivotal facet of my creative journey. Returning to the field after a two-year hiatus, while concurrently advancing my art brand, fills me with immense enthusiasm. Assuming the role of Commander on my second mission [Crew 2301] is both a privilege and an exhilarating prospect. These analog missions constitute invaluable opportunities for honing my skill set, forging vital connections, and expanding my professional network, all in pursuit of a distinctive ambition: to become the first Filipino artist to paint in space. My commitment is driven by a deep desire to bring pride to my family and my fellow countrymen. Through these missions, I’ve unearthed profound insights into myself, and I anticipate that space will offer an even more profound realm for self-discovery and learning.
In tandem with my astronaut endeavors, I’ve launched the Arte Youth Program, a philanthropic initiative centered on advancing S.T.E.A.M education. It places a special focus on providing underprivileged Filipino, Black, and Latin youth with educational opportunities. My primary goal is to kindle the aspirations of these young minds, empowering them to envision themselves as future astronauts capable of reaching for the stars. Recalling my own youth, growing up in Hollywood and benefiting from programs like the Boys and Girls Club, I once considered my current path an improbable dream. Yet, I’ve come to recognize that such dreams are not only achievable but also well within the grasp of individuals like me. My mission is to cultivate this same sense of hope and potential in the our growing generation.
