We were lucky to catch up with Reena Friedman Watts recently and have shared our conversation below.
Reena, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
My parents always told me I could be anything I wanted to be and I believe them. My dad always told me as long as he’s alive nothing bad will ever happen to me and I believed that too. That has allowed me to be a bold risk taker. I think you need to be able to try a lot of things to figure out what you like and don’t like, learn, and pivot. This creates confidence and lots of glory moments.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I got my start bird-dogging stories for the Jerry Springer show straight out of college and never looked back. Today, I’m a mompreneur raising 4 kids 15 and under. My journey has taken me from the talk show industry to reality TV and now I’m focusing on podcast producing. My passion lies in sharing the narratives of outsiders because most of my life I’ve felt like one. I’ve been dubbed the voice of the underdog. One of my proudest achievements was persevering through a highly competitive singing program during high school, which ultimately earned me a scholarship for singing in college and a job in radio. There were many days when I wanted to give up, but I never did. My ultimate objective is to be a beacon of light amid darkness and to help you share your story in a truly distinctive and meaningful manner.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Who do you need to meet and connect with? Establishing your own platform will empower you to achieve that. Thanks to launching my own podcast, I’ve had the opportunity to engage in conversations with a diverse range of individuals, including authors, celebrities, entrepreneurs, phone sex operators, college acquaintances, and even complete strangers.
What I find truly gratifying is that, in the event of a breaking news story, I can readily reach out to the people at the center of it. This capability stems from building an audience, mastering various tools and automation, and delving into the stories that resonate with me, allowing me to share them in my unique style.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn idolizing individuals and putting people on pedestals, as we are all human and possess our own unique voices. It’s important to realize others may also experience nervousness when talking to you. Conducting research before engaging with people is crucial. Understanding their interests and the language they use facilitates better communication and makes getting to know individuals and networking a more comfortable and smoother process.
