We were lucky to catch up with Reece Ferguson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Reece, thanks for joining us today. What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
The legacy I am hoping to leave is simple, but an important one. I hope to leave a legacy of kindness and love.
My goal with my business and with my personal life is to make every person feel welcomed. That every purchase is important to me no matter how small.
I make a point to go the extra mile to include others in conversations, events, parties, etc. I do this because I do know what it feels like to be the one on the outside. To be the one who can’t shop at certain stores because of my size. Not invited to certain get togethers because I wasn’t cool enough.
With my business I strive to create a network where everyone has something for them. That everyone is included. Even other businesses that do what I do, because I know how hard the work is and they deserve to be celebrated too.
I have recently started a social media platform in my hometown to spotlight local and small businesses to give everyone a chance to shine.
I hope when I am gone people will say how kind and welcoming, I was. I hope that people say that I radiated love into the spaces around me and that it spread across social groups.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started my business in 2021 in a small corner of my kitchen. I had this vision of creating candles that smelled like musical albums and fictional places. Scents that were so specific that it would transport you to a special place.
I created my very first scent “Fine Line” based off of the Harry Styles Album. I thought endlessly what that would smell like and then got to work creating it. It is one of my best sellers still today, and it still perfectly captures the vibe of that album.
I loved the thought process so much that I worked to create over 100 scents today. Spanning from Scooby Doo to Gilmore Girls themed.
I wanted to make a point to create clean and sustainable products that people would feel comfortable having in their homes. I researched the best ingredients to use to create a clean burning candle. I then expanded my product line to other natural home products,
I now have Dry Shampoo, Laundry Detergent, Car Diffusers, and Carpet Refreshers.
I am most proud of using my creative abilities to create a whole new way to enjoy your favorite pop culture references.
These unique scents bring your favorite fictional worlds to life and transports you there.
I try to make scents that haven’t been combined before, or scent notes that are less popular. Outside of my pop culture scents, I prioritize creating funny quirky scents.
Including Wakey Wakey, which is scented with maple bacon. Or Friday Night Lights, scented with lemonade popcorn and grass.
My brand is focused on creating nostalgic and magical scents that you cannot find anywhere else. We make the candle of your dreams, literally.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
When building an audience on social media, it is easy to obsess over how many followers you have. Thinking about how you can gain more and having more followers is the answer to growing your business.
Which is correct, to a point,
What i have learned the most is it is better to have quality over quantity. Having 10,000 followers who do not buy your product, interact with your posts, engage, recommend your business, does nothing for your growth,
Having 2,000 followers that has grown slowly over time and consists of loyal customers who engage and genuinely use the word of mouth to share your business will always be more positive,
I have learned that keeping up on posting multiple times a week, every day if you can, and learning to be patient for a low and slow follower gain will help you over time.

What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
I started my business as a side hustle in 2021. I have always had dreams and visions of owning my own business someday. It started as a hobby at first and grew into a small side hustle.
I started small by selling to close friends and markets for about a year. I then branched out to selling at a local farmers market. Pretty soon after that I was seeking out more frequent markets and events to sell at.
By 2023 it was starting to become a real possibility that I could grow this side hustle into a thriving business. I started making moves to grow my market reach by doing events in other cities. I also reached out to some local stores around me to sell my products in their store fronts,
When summer 2024 came around, I was working a 9 to 5 office job. I was working and then coming home to make products and then spending all my weekends at events. I was getting up at 4am before work to make products and staying up till midnight to finish products and have a few hours to see my husband before bed.
I loved my business and enjoyed the work I was doing but I was spreading myself so thin, between my 9 to 5, running my business and making all of the products, and trying to keep up with daily life and housework, I was working three full time jobs,
I was burning myself out and calling off work to finish orders and stock for my business and one day I decided that something had to give. I took a huge leap of faith with support of my husband and my village, to quit my 9 to 5 and focus all my effort on my business, It was a huge step into growing my business and it has been a wonderful adventure so far.
