Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Redwall. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Redwall thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
We have been playing music together since 5th grade. Our “craft” is really a product of growing up together and learning our instruments together. Our learning process could have 100% been sped up, but we don’t think that was the goal. Our commitment to each other as friends and to showing up every week for 7 years has allowed for us to be who we are as a band now. What was most essential for us was communication and patience throughout our childhood: we came out of it with experience in how to market an event, manage money, and coordinate with each other all while balancing the many trials that come with being in middle school and high school.
Redwall, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
We are a band of 4 people called Redwall. 3 of us are seniors at Southlake Carroll (Dominick Esposito, Bates Pulliam, Joe Brickner), and one of us graduated early last year and is now at DBU (Carson Lackey). We have been performing and recording music since we were in 5th grade, and recently released our first EP on Spotify and Apple Music called “Sounds Better With Headphones”. We perform at our own concerts that we put on as well as live music venues, and we can bring a solid crowd of people from our school with us. What we are proud of is sticking together for so long and building up recognition and our musical abilities over time. Our sound has matured so much since we started and more people know about us. What sets us apart is our passion for music and our long commitment to each other as bandmates and best friends. We would also love everyone to stream our latest EP or come watch us in concert!
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Let your kids play an instrument, and get them listening to as much music as you can. Different genres, eras, etc. What has helped our band get our unique sound is the wide range of genres that we listen to and can draw inspiration from. Our lead singer Joe Brickner listens to a lot of indie and alternative music, very focused on lyrics and vocals whereas Bates Pulliam gathers his inspiration for guitar from his deep love of Jazz and Rock music, which has built up his musical theory knowledge extensively. Carson Lackey on drums has been apart of a number of different Christian bands and has used his experience to push the band forward. Nick Esposito likes rock, sometimes heavier stuff, which gives our sound a bit of an edge.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
We have always wanted to be able to have concerts and bring a crowd of friends to come watch, and at first that was the extent of our goals. Now that we are playing more gigs and making more connections, we don’t know what is up next for us. We are all going to college and our separate ways, so for now we are taking every practice and performance as it comes.
