We were lucky to catch up with Red Martinez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Red, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
So i just dropped a project called “Rojito” which is something i put together from my discography throughout the years. Initially i had a EP come out in 2019 but i took it down because i didnt feel like i could promote it with visuals I had in mind and push it on social media at the time. So i took it down and reuploaded a few years later with some new songs but then took it down again because i had the same feeling unfortunately. But i went in the studio and re recorded some songs, took some from the vault i sat on & grabbed some remixes that i never released and boom i have a LP! Meanwhile i’m currently recording a whole new album but in the process I had a couple songs left over that I thought might fit this project. My nickname is Rojito which translates to (my Red or my little Red…as a term of endearment) I redid the project just like I redid myself so it was very meaningful.
Red, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I got into music from when I was just in high school. I had a friend back in the day who was dating someone who had a recording studio in his home, where he did music. So I asked him to start recording my own stuff and I realized I got the passion for making my own art. I’m so inspired specifically by female rappers that I just wanna go out there and make fabulous music. I love anything queer, clever, and fun. I’m super militant about my music.& I try and bring an avant-garde aspect to it.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Hmm I think generally speaking, I would say the outlook of being open-minded with just about everything. I like to say that I dont “Yuck Yums”. So there’s something that you never thought you would like and end up living for it! I think if we allow ourselves to be creative and hear other people and how their creative aspect is it’ll give us an appreciation.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
That people aren’t always down for you as you would assume and that they change Constantly. It’s unfortunate but can be realistic, So you just need to be smart with who you give your time and energy to. I’ve had friends get in relationships and turn into a whole different person and I’ve had people I worked with on Music screw me over in the long run too in a sense. The key is to let other peoples issues be their own and NOT yours. Channel that energy into creative art whether its writing, rapping or painting a picture. LOL
