We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Rebel Poet. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Rebel below.
Hi Rebel, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I come from a large Latin family! Growing up, we would get together often to celebrate special occasions. One of the things I remember most and looked forward to most about those times was my uncle performing his poetry for the family! I was maybe 7 or 8 and I remember that he would gather everyone to come watch him. I would sit right in the front on the floor crisscross in awe of the passionate performance! Believe it or not, those were the moments that sparked my passion for poetry and I knew it was something that I wanted to do for the rest of my life! I began to write and even entered public speaking contests all throughout my school age years. However, life had a funny way of taking me down the path that was meant to shape me and mold me until it was time for me to pursue that passion whole heartedly! In 2018 after realizing that I had neglected my gift and passion for way too long, I stepped into the poetry scene as a featured poet in an art, fashion, and poetry show called Articulate and the rest is history! Ever since then it has been my mission to not only speak my truth but to also help other poets and artists have a platform to get free themselves! I an currently the Art Curator at Coffee Speaks N Tea Talks and Jazz Under The Starz! I am also the Poetry Curator and Host for Poets Cafe and a GrowHouse Tampa Poet.
Rebel, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Colombian born poet who’s been writing poetry since the age of 11. My name, Rebel Poet comes from my rebellious nature to never conform to the expectations of society. I pour love into everything that I am passionate about and I believe that my purpose lies in helping, uplifting, and inspiring others to find their own passion and purpose as well! My poetry focuses on the Divine Feminine, the Divine Masculine, Consciousness, and our connection to Divinity as human beings. As a true supporter of all expressions of art and culture, I am currently the art curator at Coffee Speaks N Tea Talks and Jazz Under the Starz in Wesley Chapel. I also host, Poets Cafe. A poetry night/creative jam session held on the 1st Thursday of every month geared towards providing creatives in the area a space to express themselves and I am a member of the GrowHouse Tampa poetry collective.
I’ve been writing poetry since the age of 11. About 4 years ago, I started to pursue it more seriously and I started performing around the Tampa Bay Area. My name Rebel Poet comes from my rebellious nature to never conform to the expectations placed on as as women by society. I’ve always questioned everything! I write poetry that expresses my rebellious truths and non conforming nature.
My poetry is inspired by my experience and journey as a woman inspires my poetry because I have found that as women we are resilient, beautiful ,nurturing, and inspirational! We are creators and manifestors of beautiful things! Also, my poetry focuses on my admiration for the Divine Feminine, the Divine Masculine, and our connection to Divinity in general as humans.
I am passionate about uplifting and inspiring others to find their own passion and purpose and absolutely I believe my own purpose lies in providing a platform for my fellow poets have a place to be seen and heard and for the audience to be inspired by the experience of my spoken word events and the words of the poets performing!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding part of this journey is the Community! The creative community in Tampa is unlike any other that I have ever witnessed! It is all about collaboration and uplifting culture and each other! The Artist and Poets that I have met along this journey are my family and I am grateful to know each and every one of them and to be witness to their amazing gifts and light that they shine onto the world! Tampa is so rich with talent!!!
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My mission is to help other creatives to be seen and heard! Specifically, Poets Cafe at Coffee Speaks N Tea Talks aims to provide an inviting and family friendly environment which creates and elevates an enriched and diverse culture through visual art, literary art, and music by providing a platform, supporting, and uplifting Artists of color and all Artists who passionately pursue purpose!
