We recently connected with Rebekka Reynolds and have shared our conversation below.
Rebekka, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Looking back, what’s an important lesson you learned at a prior job
My in-laws prepared me for the world of entrepreneurship.
I went to college with the mindset that one day I would own my own business and complete world domination. You know, usual college stuff. What would I major in? What would my company look like? Sky was the limit….. until I completed my first year in college and still had no Idea what I wanted to do. I took a year off to reevaluate my life and do some volunteer work at a local church. It was there that I met a cute guy who offered me a job at his parents’ boutique and completely changed my life.
I joined the shipping department of this faith-based e-commerce store and fell in love with the company, the mission, the job, my bosses and the cute boy guy that me the job. I started in shipping but when the company offered me the company Instagram account I jumped at the opportunity to take on more responsibility. I spent hours at night trying to learn to edit graphics, figure out a hashtag strategy and learning how to write copy online. I loved running that account. I changed my major to marketing hoping it would help me thrive in a future position. I poured myself into a family business that became MY family’s business. I became an intrapreneur.
My mother and father in law showed me what entrepreneurship looked like. They were tenacious, flexible, driven, and valued customer experience over everything. They taught me how to look at and follow the $$$ in addition to creating a business that was based on their own values and beliefs. I saw the behind the scenes of the panic that hit when sales ran low and experienced the excitement of a record setting month. I saw the struggle of having 10 things that didn’t work and then finding something that clicked and transformed the business. I got to see behind the curtain for 7 years.
That job taught me 5 of the greatest lessons in entrepreneurship:
1) You need to take care of your customers AND you need to make money. You cannot do one without the other.
2) Always be able to adapt. Things that WIN today may not win next week. Always be prepared to change.
3) You need to believe in yourself. And you need to believe in yourself A LOT. Because everyone and their mom will have an opinion about what you do. You need to trust your gut, go with your instincts and then learn from your mistakes. This will make you better at trusting your gut and your gut will be more accurate.
4) You can learn or hire every single thing you need. The best and most successful people on this planet are the people that can problem solve. If you can’t solve it yourself, figure out who can solve it for you.
5) Nothing is perfect. It can ALWAYS be improved. So don’t bother waiting until it’s perfect. Refine as you go.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
As I mentioned earlier- I come from my family business as a background. So I already have 7 years of experience in my industry before I started my own company.
I started Reynolds Media Marketing because I love social media marketing. I don’t mean “Yes I love that! It’s totally cool!” I mean I eat, sleep and breath digital marketing. I day dream about promotion ideas. I create social media content DAILY. I listen to podcasts and read marketing books and consistently think about ways brands can develop online cult followings.
One of my biggest differentiators in the market is that I am a marketer that has OWNED a successful and profitable business. I know what it’s like to dump thousands of dollars into a campaign to have it flunk. I know the pit in your stomach when sales dropped and now you have to pivot. I know what it’s like to hire on an agency for thousands of dollars only to have them deliver ZILCH. The best part? I partner with clients. They’re not just an account number to me.
The companies who have worked with me can expect to be omnipresent online. We create compelling video content, social media posts, emails and ads that create online brands people love.
Some results we’ve driven recently were:
40M+ in online sales.
Exploded my own social media accounts to a combined 200k followers.
Delivered a startup a 500% return on their marketing budget.
Increased a real estate company’s social media reach by 2000% in 2 months.
Generated $100,000 in sales from a one-day sales promotion for Cyber Monday.
Alright – let’s talk about marketing or sales – do you have any fun stories about a risk you’ve taken or something else exciting on the sales and marketing side?
The most underrated sales tactics in the entire world are serving up front and being consistent.
I recently landed a gig speaking to college students because their professor saw me on an interview almost a year beforehand. She followed me for a YEAR before messaging me to speak. Most people if they don’t see results in a week or two give up. KEEP showing up, over and over and over.
Another great example would be last June I met up with a local small business owner who was looking for some marketing help. I knew they wouldn’t be a client but I took the meeting anyway and offered as much help as I could in our coffee chat. I thought nothing of it. 6 Months later she introduced me to her sister who became one of the largest sales calls in my business. Serve people and the money always comes.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One bad mindset I picked up working in the family business was the idea that “I need to work harder, to make more money.” I thought if someone wasn’t working 40+ hours a week they were lazy. Reading that literally makes me laugh out loud now. To make more money you just need to sell something of value. Yes, you can’t be lazy and there is hustle involved but there is something incredibly freeing when you lose the “I need to run myself ragged in order to be worthy of making a lot of money” mentality.
I currently work 20-32 hours a week and I’m on track to double my revenue this year.
I make more but I work less because I focus on selling results- NOT hours of my time.
