We were lucky to catch up with Rebekka Eliza recently and have shared our conversation below.
Rebekka, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
My name is Rebekka Eliza and I am a fashion and beauty photographer.
I was working as a designer in fashion for several years. For in jobs positions and later on as a freelancer. Until one of my clients asked me to help out with the shoot. They could not find a photographer that would match their brand concept and aesthetics. After several shoots which did not turn out as they were looking for, I told them I could give it a try. So I rented a camera (seriously no idea how things worked), found a studio and asked a befriended model. We shot the collection that day and since then I knew photography was what I loved and was meant to be doing.
Rebekka, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Originally I am Dutch, but since almost 10 years I am living and working abroad , most of the years in Portugal where I am also based at the moment. For magazines as Marie Claire, Elle, L’Officiel and others I shoot fashion and beauty editorials. For advertising clients I photograph their campaigns and look books.
Before discovering photography, I worked as a designer in the fashion world, until one day I rented a camera, asked a befriended model and photographed in a local studio some of my own designs. From that moment on, I knew that photography was my true passion — a form of intuitive expression that brings me fulfilment, drive and endless inspiration.
I find my inspiration everywhere, but unconsciously, everything I experience, see, feel, or passes by goes to a place in my mind and mingles together into something, a feeling that expresses in my work.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
For me it’s really network, from one job you get into another. When working and meeting new people on set, or friends of the brand you work for that refer you as definitely for me the best source of new clients. Not instagram, direct emailing but the old fashion way, mouth to mouth and connecting in real life with people. A really important thing for me in this business is making sure the client is getting what they are looking for, be kind and helpful, make sure they have a good time on the shoot day and also afterwards I always make sure they get their retouched selections as soon as possible in the best way possible. Communication is key and also a feeling for understanding what a client needs and is looking for. I really like that part of my business.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
That you can always develop and grow and determine your own journey. It’s a struggle but so rewarding !
