We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rebekah Ondejko a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Rebekah thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start big picture – what are some of biggest trends you are seeing in your industry?
In the hair industry of late I am seeing a trend toward independent artistry and away from the retail doldrums of days past. So, a new stylist might bypass commission-based salons and set their sights on their own salon suite, their own brand. Therefore, and largely thanks to grievances against old business models, the paradigm shifts towards independent business owners and artists.
A decade into my career, life happened, as it goes. For a great many of us, it took no less than a global health crisis to hit the reset button. In which time a lot of us chose to set out on our own rather than go back to paying dues.
We are operating under the assumption of a new perspective on the craft. There is an exciting and tenuous frontier of self-expression, a landscape post-salon trends of traditions past. We are taking back the means of production and revitalizing the profession with fresh eyes.

Rebekah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am an alternative hairstylist in downtown St. Petersburg. I started cosmetology school and landed my first salon job at 16 years old. Since then, I’ve immersed myself in the industry, constantly pushing boundaries and exploring bold new looks. In 2023 I opened Pretty in Punk, a private studio where edgy styles and vivid colors come to life.
I specialize in creating unique, eye-catching styles that stand out. From vibrant hair colors to unconventional cuts, I offer a range of services tailored to those who want to express their individuality. My studio provides a private, personalized experience where clients can truly embrace their distinct style without limits.
What sets me apart is my dedication to delivering transformative results in a creative, welcoming environment. I’m proud of the confidence and individuality my clients gain from their new looks. If you’re ready to break away from the norm and explore your personal style in a bold, new way, Pretty in Punk is the place for you.

We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
To foster brand loyalty as a hairstylist, I first focus on creating a welcoming and memorable experience. I offer anything my client could need to feel comfortable, drinks, snacks, chargers, tablet for TV shows/movies. I focus on creating a personal connection with my clients. Learning about their lives, listening attentively, and remembering key details for future visits. I make their needs a priority, whether it’s a major transformation or a subtle tweak. I realize that not everyone will remember the exact haircut or color I gave them but they will remember they way they felt when they left my chair.
After appointments, I follow up to make sure they are happy with their new look and remind them that they are always welcome to reach out with any questions or product requests. My clients know that I am available for help even after they leave my studio.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
It’s safe to say, social media is an invaluable tool for hairstylists looking to attract new clients. Due to its visual nature and broad reach, platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook are inherently suited to showcasing the stylists work. By posting high-quality images and videos, you can effectively capture the attention of potential clients who are scrolling through their feeds. This visual appeal is crucial in a profession where aesthetics are paramount.
Additionally, social media enables targeted advertising, allowing you to direct your promotions to specific demographics, interests, and locations. This means you can reach potential clients who are most likely to be interested in your services, increasing the efficiency of your marketing efforts. Engaging directly with your audience through comments, messages, and live sessions helps build a community and foster trust, which is essential for converting followers into clients.
Social media also facilitates the sharing of client testimonials and reviews. Positive feedback from satisfied clients can enhance your credibility and attract new clients looking for a new stylist Collaborations with other beauty professionals and influencers can further expand your reach, introducing your work to their followers and creating valuable cross-promotional opportunities.
Cost-effectiveness is another advantage, as social media marketing is virtually free compared to traditional advertising methods. Platforms offer various ways to promote your services, from sponsored posts to organic content, allowing you to manage costs effectively.
Overall, social media combines visual appeal, targeted marketing, direct engagement, and cost-efficiency, making it an ideal platform for hairstylists to find and attract new clients.
