We were lucky to catch up with Rebekah Laur’en recently and have shared our conversation below.
Rebekah, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I’ve been professionally performing a little over 10 years now but have been learning my craft since I was a child. I can honestly say it is a constant process because it’s also about learning yourself. It’s a never ending journey but it truly gets better the more you do and the more you learn.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a singer, songwriter, composer, and producer from Woodbridge, Virginia and have Bachelors degree in Vocal Performance with classical training as a full lyric soprano.
After college, I decided to move away from opera into another musical journey. I always wrote songs as a child. As I grew into my craft and into myself, I continued to create original music which turned into composing and producting music with a unique sound and style placement of an alternative R&B artist.
In 2022, I released my project “SMOKE AND MIRRORS EP” and this Summer I plan to release another EP titled “Summer Nights”.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I have a true passion for people and connecting with people has always been a mission of mine. Music connects with people in a spiritual and emotional ways. I remember my first experience of seeing how music can truly help people and shift people when I was singing in church as a child but I later experienced how music has the same power to move people in other ways. That was a major shift for me because I began to see music as something that is a part of all of us. It’s like the concept of “Om”; It is truly in all of us and threaded through all living things. In my music, I love telling stories and use many of my own and others’ life experiences, pains, triumphs, to connect with peoples hearts.
Music can truly heal. I say this because I have used music in my own process of healing. I’m driven to tell stories that are authentic with my music but that also connect with others. It’s nice when you hear a song and you feel seen and heard by that artist. I aim to be that artist for many people.
I also want to bridge the gap between classical music and “popular” music. I have never forgotten my roots and have always wanted to bridge the two worlds.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I built much of my social media audiance from my live shows I do along with just also connecting with people who found me and truly show support on my page. Live shows however, have proven to be a solid way to build a following as well as staying on top of your content and showing who you are as a person. I also make sure to follow up with my followers by writing them messages when contact me directly and let them know when I will be performing again. They want to connect to an actual person not just a page.
