Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Rebecca Todd. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Rebecca , thanks for joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
The mission behind TruBlu Images is to create impactful photography for brands and organizations that value the environment and their communities. Over the past few years I have been learning more about how our fast-paced consumer society is polluting our Earth and killing our biodiversity. I have shifted my everyday lifestyle to be more sustainable. I overall felt like this wasn’t enough to make a difference, so I decided I should work with brands that are trying to make a difference as well. The companies I photograph for focus on non-toxic ingredients in their products, using compostable packaging and they also give back to people in their communities in need. Doing this work is very rewarding. I believe that if we shift what the consumer buys everyday and how large corporations practice sustainability, then we can make the Earth a healthier and safer place to live.

Rebecca , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I was raised in the New Orleans area and my love for photography started in high school back in 2005. I then studied photography at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA where I created black and white images in the darkroom. I have always been drawn to documentary photography and my dream is to work with National Geographic. After college I moved to New Orleans and worked as a photographer with the New Orleans Tourism and Marketing Corporation. It was such a fun job photographing festivals, bars, live music, attractions and more for the Big Easy! I was able to grow my commercial photography portfolio and really grow in my craft.
My husband and I moved to Denver in 2017 to experience the outdoors and the snow! We fell in love with Colorado and went camping, hiking and skiing every chance we could get. We have two dogs, a Siberian Husky and a Black Lab that also love the mountains. I then grew my photography business in Denver by joining different networking groups and meeting as many people as possible. In 2018 I started photographing for Visit Denver Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. I photographed breweries, restaurants, festivals, and attractions. My business was growing quickly and I was photographing events, food and beverage, commercial spaces, products and more. Every job was something new and exciting. I was able to help companies have high end vibrant photographs for their websites, social media, newsletters and advertising. It’s always fun to see your work out in the world and to see the companies you work with grow! My clients have become my close friends that I have photographed for year after year.
In 2021, I rebranded my business to TruBlu Images and fell in love with the fresh new look and purposeful mission. I had already worked with brands that value sustainability, so the mission fit my company perfectly. I’ve joined Good Business Colorado and have started networking with other like minded business owners. My goal is not to just take beautiful photographs, but to take photographs that have an overall purpose for helping save our planet Earth.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The way I have grown my clientele in Denver is through professional networking. I attend many networking events and am a member of a few groups. I form lasting relationships with the people in these groups. I do one-on-one coffee meetings with people and send them referrals whenever possible. My strong network helped my business survive through the COVID-19 shutdown. My clientele is mainly repeat business and referrals from other business owners. Most of the time I am the only photographer at networking events, which gives me an advantage on meeting potential clients.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is having SO much fun when you are on a photoshoot. I get to meet amazing people, create fun photographs that have a purpose, and create a flexible schedule that allows me to spend time with my 5 month old daughter. I wouldn’t trade this life for anything!
