We recently connected with Rebecca Schaffer and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Rebecca thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I spent my career working for humanitarian organizations because of my passion for helping people and my desire to change the world. That calling put me exactly where I needed to be for many years and, in addition to helping my community, it allowed me to experience growth in so many ways. I am very grateful for the experiences, mentors, travel opportunities, education, and much more, that I received throughout my career.
Fast forward to 2020 and I finally had my “dream job” in Nonprofit Management after spending nearly 15 years working toward it. Hooray for me but after a year working as a Senior Director of Development for a well-known and respected nonprofit organization, I left. It was no longer my dream job. In fact, I was miserable. I wasn’t miserable enough to leave right away, after all, how could I be so miserable? I finally had my dream job!
I was in denial.
It took at least six months of the universe sending me signs for me to build up the strength and certainty necessary to leave my career behind and start anew. Completely anew.
I left my comfortable and stable career to begin a new and unknown journey as a full time Reiki practitioner and Certified Kundalini Yoga Teacher. Prior to my promotion to my “dream job”, I went through an awakening that led to deep personal healing on many levels and I was guided to help others experience the same.
My passion for helping people and my desire to change the world is still driving me today and now that I have discovered and cultivated my gifts as a healer and teacher, I am working hard to help others experience deep and powerful healing too.
My business is still new and I’m navigating an unknown journey, but I know that continuing to listen to my heart while doing the work, will put me where I need to be to succeed.
Rebecca, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a Reiki Master and Kundalini Yoga teacher in South Florida and I operate in Boca Raton. I left my career in nonprofit management over a year ago to pursue energy healing full time and I am grateful I get to do what I love.
I went through a major spiritual awakening in 2020 that led me to my path as a healer and a teacher. During the process, I was able to heal a lot of my own trauma and subconscious patterns to get to a place of inner peace and self-acceptance that allows me to live an authentic, confident, completely sober, and conscious life.
I have found that we can bring together science and metaphysics to heal physical, mental/emotional, and spiritual pain—both conscious and subconscious, but mostly subconscious—to elevate ourselves in ways that were seemingly impossible.
I use Shamballa Reiki and Kundalini Yoga to help people clear away and heal from the inside so they can experience life from an elevated level of joy, satisfaction, clarity, and intuition. Childhood trauma, heartbreaks, and painful experiences manifest as pain and health issues in our physical, mental/emotional, and spiritual bodies. Most of the time, we aren’t even aware it is happening until something throws us completely off track.
Shamballa Reiki and Kundalini Yoga have the ability to heal deep pain and give us insights into that pain. An added bonus is that the yoga and meditations provide incredibly spiritual and transcendental experiences that heighten our consciousness.
When I am not focusing on my healing practice, I enjoy spending time with my five-year-old daughter and husband and going on adventures, creating art, and spending time outdoors.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
I think it’s important to listen to your intuition and trust yourself when making decisions or pitching ideas. There have been many times in my career, both former and current, when I let big personalities, declarative, loud voices, and people in higher positions sway me into believing that I was wrong, or I should do something their way. Most times, it turned out, I should have stood up for my ideas, listened to my intuition, and trusted myself because it would have worked out well. Also, many times, they were just flat out wrong.
I also found that once I started trusting myself, tuning in and listening to my intuition, I had more power and confidence behind me to argue for my idea or perspective. And, when I did that, a lot of times, people came around. People also respect that.
I do believe it is also necessary to seek help and support from others. We can’t do everything on our own and sometimes, we need people with more experience to give us advice, so we can avoid unnecessary mistakes. It’s about knowing who you can trust and when outside support is needed.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
The first thing I thought of when I heard this question was the time when I was the Executive Assistant to the CEO at the local Red Cross. The man I worked for was a hardcore business guy who some have said had a 1950s management style.
I respected him very much because he was very smart and really good at his job, but it wasn’t easy working for him. He didn’t hold back from calling me a pathetic waif, a failure when I made a mistake, or telling me that there was no light at the end of the tunnel. There were many times I went to the bathroom and cried (I am a very sensitive, empathic soul so this was very hard for me) but I stuck it out.
Remember, my “dream job” I mentioned? This is what I thought I needed to endure in order to get there and I knew it was an opportunity to learn from someone very smart and gain invaluable skills and experiences. And I did. And he promoted me.
That was my way into nonprofit fundraising and although it was hard, it made me who I am today and put me on my path. And it made me a little tougher.
