We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rebecca Murphy a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Rebecca, appreciate you joining us today. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
I absolutely love being a business owner. It gives a lot of creative freedom while being hands on to give my clients the best experience possible. Of course it requires 24/7 attention compared to a 9-5 where you can clock out but I wouldn’t ever trade to go back! I love that I made my passion my job.
Rebecca, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I got into the beauty industry after I decided the medical field wasn’t for me. I enrolled in cosmetology school after completing EMT school and quickly fell in love with styling and coloring. I got into weddings shortly after finishing cosmetology school and started assisting the owner of my current salon. It was definitely a 24/7 job to start off my business. Nothing was easy but I had such a passion that it kept driving me to continue learning and growing. Social media was a big factor into the growth of clients and weddings. I want my clients to feel comfortable and confident after their hair or makeup is done. A lot of my clients come to me for my signature braids and boho styling, my color clients come for natural lived in color and extension clients for big transformations or something as simple as adding a little volume. My favorite part of my job is at the end seeing the smiles on my clients faces and getting their friends and family in shortly after their appointment.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Social media is a huge part of my business and I believe every business needs to be using it in some way. Short videos or posts of your products or showcasing final results can help customers/clients see the vision as why they should buy or come to you instead of the thousands of other businesses. Showing the personality in your business helps a lot with people to be able to connect and understand what you do. For my business I post often and do many before and afters. I’ve found it helps clients visualize a possible end results for them, if their hair is similar to what I had posted. For weddings, many brides are searching on tik tok or Instagram for vendors so I make sure to tag or hashtags the areas or type of services I’m doing.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Social media and networking has been the biggest help in growing my clientele. Connecting with other artists and vendors in my area has grown my business so much. As I said before social media has been help into my growth as well. Word of mouth is still very powerful especially if you’re a small business or one that is a local brand. Never turn down an opportunity to meet with other people in your field, even if it’s competition there’s always something to learn and grow when meeting new business owners.
