We were lucky to catch up with Rebecca Maurer recently and have shared our conversation below.
Rebecca, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I wanted to pursue a creative path professionally from a young age, with a strong influence from a high school art teacher who fostered my love for art. My journey led to majoring in Film at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and eventually led me to a full time art teacher in Los Angeles
Rebecca, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
After Graduating from UARTS, I worked in entertainment and fashion industry, gaining experience and working for several years. However, I realized it wasn’t my true calling and decided to walk away. I knew that the only way to feel fulfilled was to do something creative. When my son started going to public school, I noticed the lack of art. Being it was such an important experience for me when i was in school, I decided to do something about it. I offered to volunteer and provide art classes to all of the students at the school. My dedication and positive response led to a full time position as the art teacher. Which is really hard to do in a Los Angeles public school. As a full time art teacher i provide essential services by fostering creativity and critical thinking skills among elementary school children. I am able to contribute to a well rounded education , ensuring that children have exposure to art. In doing so, I address the need for art in their lives, solving the problem of limited art resources in LAUSD.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
The world would be and ugly place without art. We need to recognize and value the importance of the arts. We need to provide MORE accessible art education. WE need more funding for creative initiative. And we need more platforms for artists to showcase their work. Supporting local art events, purchasing art work , and advocating policies that protect and promote the arts are also crucial in fostering a supportive environment for artists. We need to bring back arts funding at the elementary school level.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My mission is to ensure all children have access to art in their lives. I love to foster creativity and critical thinking skills. I want to give students opportunities to explore a multitude of mediums, and experiences that the normally would not get to anywhere else. I love seeing the excitement on their faces when the come to class. And the pride they feel when they share and talk about their artwork.
