We were lucky to catch up with Rebecca Martin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Rebecca, thanks for joining us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
Many people dream of lives where they have more time, flexibility, and overall freedom. However, acting on dreams, ideas, or opportunities always comes with risk. When I decided to leave my job and start my own business, I was terrified. I knew in my gut it was the right thing for myself and my family but fear can be paralyzing. Many people I talked to along the way asked “Why? Why take the risk?” I started my own small business, a yoga studio. A dream to create a community that uplifted one another on and off the mat and gave people a place to move and feel safe to show up as they were. I put everything on the line and made a bet on myself. It was a huge risk, but everything in life is. Everything that truly makes the biggest impact on our journey will always come with a risk. Believing in yourself and doing what you know you are meant to do in this life is always the road worth taking!

Rebecca, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I use to teach full time and started burning out. I wanted to stay in the movement realm but have more flexibility to utilize all the facets of myself that I knew I would enjoy. I found a job as a Studio Manager running a fitness franchise for another franchise owner. I grew with their supportive and knowledgeable team to a Regional Manager. When I had my first child, I chose to start my own small business. I chose YogaSix due to the brands mission to make yoga FEEL accessible. We welcome every human right where they are. No need to be flexible or know all the poses. Within our four walls we have a STRONG community where we can all practice next to one another, no matter our experience. We hold space for one another on and off the mat. Many people are drawn to our studio due to our variety of classes, incredible teachers and clean welcoming atmosphere. They stay for all of it and the community they find along the way. If you are someone looking for a movement form that helps with mental and physical health, we are a wonderful place to try!

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
When you are managing a team I feel it is most important to make sure you keep an open mind and know that you can learn from them too! People want to feel seen and valued, which makes sense, I want to feel that way too. You can’t always make everyone happy, that is simply impossible but if you choose to really show up for those that show up for you, your team will remain strong and overall morale will shine through your staff to your clients. Bottom line, show up for those that show up for you. If they aren’t the right fit, make that decision quickly as negativity can ruin morale quickly.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I truly believe that people respond to businesses that really hold strong in their niche. We don’t try to be like every other yoga studio around us. We all have something special and there is a right place for everyone. Stay focused on what makes you and or your business special and dive into that!!
