We were lucky to catch up with Rebecca Lee recently and have shared our conversation below.
Rebecca, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you in your professional career?
There are a couple things I’ve learned and have taken away from my career.
The first is, that only you can make things happen. Whatever idea or dream you have, you just have to go for it and only you can be that person to make it happen. Those opportunities don’t just fall in your lap.
The second is to trust your gut. When faced with a difficult decision, I like to go with what my heart is telling me to do. Once I’ve made a decision, I stop thinking about the other choice and deal with whatever consequences or actions my decision has allowed me to do.
And the final piece of advice, is to say yes to things and take some chances. You never know what new opportunities or perspectives they might bring you. Sometimes, these opportunities come from the worst possible scenarios, so I always try and be open-minded and optimistic about everything.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
In the daytime, I work as Senior Financial Analyst. But my hobbies and my creative life really dictate more of who I am. I spend a lot of my time either climbing or hiking and camping in the outdoors, often at National Parks. I think my activities of being in the outdoors has allowed me to connect with other like-minded people and also express my creative freedom that I don’t get in my day job.
By sharing my hobbies on social media, I was able to find a financial opportunity through Instagram. I was first reached out by a hammock brand a few years ago, who discovered my barely existent social media presence back in the day but saw me as someone authentic to share their brand. Once I partnered and shared my interests with them, I think other brands began to see me as a spokesperson of someone who genuinely loves the outdoors and can deliver that message through these companies as well.
The key is authenticity and being truly excited to work with these brands. It can definitely show in who you are and what you deliver.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My main mission in my creative journey is to be authentic to myself. I want to only create content that I’m excited about. If I’m not excited about what I create or the brands that I work with, then there’s no point to be doing it. Plus, it shows in the content I create. People can tell whether or not you’re excited or passionate about what you’re making and will only resonate with what you produce if they can truly tell that you are actually genuine about it.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the validation I receive from expressing my creative freedom in the hobbies that I enjoy. I have a growing love of photography and I love utilizing photography to share what I see and how I view the outdoors. When I do get reached out by brands and/or get positive feedback from my followers, it feels so rewarding that they appreciate and enjoy the content that I create through authenticity and pure joy.
