Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Rebecca Lee. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Rebecca thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
Although the majority of my working life has been as a creative, starting my journey as a metalsmith sooner is something I think about often. It wasn’t until my mid 20s that I considered making a shift towards jewelry making. I imagine that if I had been lucky enough to start straight after grade school I could have taken advantage of the resources afforded to college age students. Many grants, residencies for those studying and expanding on their craft skills are geared towards folks under 25. Starting earlier could have meant more time to study under master craftspeople. However I do think starting later allowed me to really commit to this path.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Sure! My name is Rebecca and I’m the one and only person behind Blavk Jewelry, an exploration of sacred adornment and its capacity to provide protection and control for all intersections of marginalized people. This work was born out of my own spiritual practice and because of that I approach creating it differently. Jewelry is often seen as a luxury or simply sentimental but I see it as a necessary form of armor. I work with both metaphysical properties of gemstones + sigil magic to offer jewelry that can help bring clarity, love, and protection among other things into folks’ lives. What many don’t see is the ritual that surrounds the creation of the piece and the work I do to bless the piece after its completion.
My approach to custom jewelry is also different than standard jewelers. Instead of focusing on the look of the final piece initially, I start with something a client is looking to change or bring into their lives. I consult tarot and spirit to gather more information on the situation and design a piece of jewelry featuring gemstones and sigil magic that address the issue. Blavk Jewelry pieces serve more than just an aesthetic purpose.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Something that I think non-creatives struggle to understand not necessarily about MY journey but about creatives in general is how much time our work takes. We live in a world where you can get anything you need at the click of a button which has skewed people’s perception of just how long creating a quality product takes. Our time and skills have value, when you’re purchasing work from a creative know that you’re getting our years of experience in addition to the product. You’re supporting our livelihood!

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I am always humbled and in complete gratitude to those who trust me to create meaningful custom pieces that aid them in their healing journey and mark important milestones in their lives. I treat their requests with the utmost respect and reverence.
