We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rebecca Klementovich a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Rebecca, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
Hello I thank you for having me on the show.
My first sale was through a dear friend of mine kenneth Dower, who worked in a Gallery. We both lived in New York City at the time. Kenneth brought his dear childhood friend to come see my work in my apartment.
His friend really loved one piece and asked if he could bring it to where he was staying, which was the famous W hotel. I did. He bought the piece which was one of my first sales, which, of course, is very exciting.
Then things got a little strange. His friend had escaped from Florida, and was mentally ill. He soon was taken from the W hotel into Bellevue. I’m not sure what happened to that painting, but it is a great first sale story.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My work unites Abstract painting with Semi Landscapes. I use a unique colorful palette to express nature. To describe my work, I Drop the horizon line to make a landscape abstract.
I Graduated from the Fashion Institute of technology NYC, i specialized in fashion illustration. I was a textile designer and fashion art director for 22 years in New York City..
My art career gave me a love of color and a strong design component to my paintings. Fashion illustration gave me the background for the gestural and bold color palette for my landscapes and abstracts.
I lived in northern New Hampshire near the Mount Washington area for many years. The mountains gave me the nostalgia and the lyrical feeling for the landscapes.. All of these elements have helped make these large, modern, unique fine art paintings. I now live near Portsmouth, NH.
Alright – let’s talk about marketing or sales – do you have any fun stories about a risk you’ve taken or something else exciting on the sales and marketing side?
One of my favorite marketing stories was during Covid. I have been painting for four months in my studio up in the Mount Washington area. It was when Covid was very deadly. In the beginning, no one had really seen much of each other. And people were desperate for connection. We had just had a foot of fresh white snow. So I decided to hang four of my 5 foot paintings in the front yard on a bunch of birch trees. I gave a date and time on Facebook and invited anyone to drive by. Many of my friends drove by and opened their car window and gave me a wave.
Two years later a neighborhood bought one of the pieces from my outside birch tree.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
One summer I decided with a friend to wear long gowns and to bring our paintings to the top of Mount Washington. Our paintings mind you were 3 to 5 feet. We put on heels and long gowns and drove up to the mountain. The winds were 40 mph. As we stood holding the paintings In ridiculously improper shoes, we Quickly realize how dangerous it really was. The wind at one point almost blew me over off of a boulder we were on. Luckily, my friend caught my arm.
My bio picture is this day described.
Our local newspaper picked up the story, and we were lucky enough to get on the front page of the paper.
