We were lucky to catch up with Rebecca Jean Pierre recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Rebecca, thanks for joining us today. Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
When I was in high school, I came up with the idea to sell cupcakes to my classmates. To be honest with you, I’m still not entirely sure till this day where that even came from, but I did it from Sophomore through Senior year. It was a hit, my classmates loved them and sometimes a few of my teachers bought some.
I did have friends (who I’m super grateful for) that helped me with the sales. With their help, I was able to reach so many of my fellow classmates.
Every night I would go home and sometimes didn’t even worry about my homework, I just got to baking. They were pretty basic cupcakes, just out of the box and I bought the icing from the tube and just threw them together. Every morning my friends got a bowl full of cupcakes and by the end of the day, We were usually sold out. After I graduated High School, I left desserts and got a job.
About a year later, it was my sister’s birthday, and my mom was working that day, so we didn’t get a cake. I decided to make one for her since I had some tools on hand. By the end, I had made a mess of a 3-tiered cake but I loved it and was so excited about it. From there I made a cake for all of our birthdays for the following years.
Baking started to grasp my attention once more and I started doing my research on cakes and the process and gained a lot of knowledge and it truly felt like my calling. I had developed this passion for making cakes and desserts and I decided that this is what I wanted to do. I feel like desserts bring happiness and I love seeing my customers excited for their end result. I get excited as well to see the result when I’m working on an order because I enjoy tapping into my creativity and putting something amazing together.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Well, My name is Rebecca, and I chose the name Becky’s Bakeshop simply because I go by Becky. My family, friends, and clients know me as Becky. I’ve had my business for four years, but I’ve been in the baking industry for about eight years. I developed a passion for baking after expanding my knowledge and immersing myself in the world of desserts. I studied techniques, experimented with new ingredients, and created new products. After I experienced the joy that my creations brought to my clients, I knew that this was the path I was meant to follow, and I have never looked back since.
I think I’ve always been entrepreneurial-oriented from a young age. I grew up in Haiti, where my grandma sold Haitian pasties to the locals in the neighborhood, my father was a painter who sold his work to high-value clients, and my great-aunt owned a convenience store in her home. After graduating high school, I didn’t have a desire to go to college because it wasn’t what I saw for myself. My dream was always entrepreneurship; I just wasn’t sure what I wanted to do until my love for baking came to fruition.
My creativity mostly comes from a blend of inspiration, passion, and a connection to the craft. I thrive on my ability to be creative as the possibilities are endless. Each baker brings their own flair, style, and personality to their work, resulting in a distinctive signature that sets them apart. As for me, it’s an ongoing journey of self-expression, where I continuously refine my skills and strive for perfection.
Aside from cakes, I also create custom and luxury cupcakes, dipped treats, and custom toppers for any occasion, from birthdays to baby showers, weddings, anniversaries, and more. In this day and age, affordability is definitely a major factor, and I hope to provide great products at an even greater price. I don’t believe that quality should be substituted for affordability. I understand that everyone has different budgets and financial constraints, so I offer various options to accommodate various needs. This includes our Becky-to-go products, which are options that you can purchase directly through the website if custom products are not feasible at the time. They offer the same great taste and beautiful look at a portion of the cost.
Your cake should be as fabulous as you are. My job is to make sure you have a jaw-dropping piece of art on your table. I am most proud of the relationships I have built with my clients. Some, I even get to call a friend. It brings me great joy to be the one to provide them with an additional sense of happiness and to be a part of their most cherished celebrations. The trust they place in me to deliver exceptional quality helps me continually elevate my craft.
For potential clients, I want them to know that my brand stands for excellence, and Quality. I pour my heart and soul into every creation, and my ultimate goal is to create a lasting impression with every bite. Whether you’re seeking a memorable cake for a milestone event or simply looking to indulge in a delightful treat, I am here to create a sweet experience that surpasses your expectations.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I remember my very first time crying over an order. It was shortly after I had just started making cakes, I was so excited because a planner had contacted me to work with me and it was my first time making a large order. We went over the details, the client paid and I was so confident. The client wanted a fondant covered tiered cake. I had never made a fondant nor a tiered cake before.
Baking the cake was a breeze, but my struggles were with decorating. At the time I felt I had learned a lot already and I would be able to execute this with no problem. Well…There were lots of problems. After adding the fondant to the cake, I didn’t notice that it was definitely too thick and heavy for my cake layers, so the cake had already started bulging. I placed it in the fridge and thought that would help. Later, I added the second tier to my cake but I failed to learn at the time that tiered cakes need support on the bottom to hold the weight of the top tier. The next day as I headed to my delivery, my cake started to crumble like Jericho with no means for me to fix it.
When I delivered my cake, it had fallen apart and the planner and the client were so upset. In the end, I returned the money to my client and I just cried. I started to feel like this was not for me and that I would just be ruining someone’s event.
It took some time and I didn’t accept any tiered cakes for a while but I was determined to not let this defeat me. I took some online classes, did lots of research, and watched lots of videos.
Now I prefer to make tiered cakes. I will often persuade my clients into a multi-tiered cake rather than one large tier cake for large servings. I love the elegance and the possibilities for designs are endless with more space to work with.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I think for me, It’s the execution. There’s nothing like having an idea and working through it. It’s the hours spent putting together a plan, purchasing the necessary pieces, building it from nothing to something, the placement of each decoration, and seeing my final product come together. Creating anything involves being patient, learning to course correct and deal with imperfection and failure. It makes me appreciate the art itself because I understand what it takes to create something amazing. A client may send me a theme and within moments, an image will come to mind as to what I want that product to look like, but it may also take me a week to figure it out; as artists we just learn to pivot and allow our imagination to take the wheel.
I sometimes do get a creative Block but the way I overcome that is simply by walking away. I may be working on a cake and if i’m not sure what I want the details to be. I will just put it away, and take a walk, or go to sleep or scroll through Instagram. Taking a step back allows me to clear my mind and by the time I get back to it, I’ve managed to put together the pieces and I can implement a new idea and create something beautiful.
My clients are expecting a work of art from me so being able to be creative and give them something that they fall in love with that I put together is truly a blessing and an opportunity that I do not take for granted.
