We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rebecca Hollar a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Rebecca thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Music is the first creative outlet I’ve had. I started taking piano lessons when I was a child, started playing drums in middle school, and taught myself how to play guitar in high school. In 2020, I started producing my own beats. A couple months later during quarantine, I decided to pick up a new hobby and teach myself how to sew. My learning process consisted of several YouTube tutorials and failed project attempts. Being self-taught, it was really hard for me because I would mess up often and would get frustrated. But as I continued practicing, things eventually began to click, and I developed a better understanding and thought process on how I can bring my ideas to life. That’s when it became fun for me and turned into one of my passions. Loving and having fun with your craft is essential, that’s when you’re able to learn and grow the most in it.

Rebecca, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a 22-year-old creative based out of Kansas City. I recently graduated with a degree in Health Science from UMKC. However, I’ve always had an interest in many forms of art such as fashion, music, photography, and modeling. Having experience in all these things helped me launch my brand “Spacecamp Sudios” in 2021. Spacecamp is a luxury streetwear brand known for its trendy, unique designs, and custom pieces. I showcased my first collection at a fashion show later that Fall, that’s when I started seeing more opportunities gravitate towards me. Within a year, my work has been featured in many pop-up shops and shown in multiple fashion shows in Kansas City and Los Angeles. For my fashion shows, I incorporate my love for music by creating the music for my models to walk to. Doing this makes me feel like I have complete creative control and I think it also sets me apart from others.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a designer is being able to create pieces that make people stand out and feel good, especially with one-of-one pieces. I love making customs for people because nobody else is going to have it or be able to get the exact same piece. It’s more personal for the person that gets to wear it.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I think someone who isn’t a creative might struggle to understand the time and energy an artist puts into their work and undervalue it. For example, when I’m designing a new look, it takes a lot of time to take my idea, turn it into a sketch, make the pattern, find the fabric, cut the fabric, and sew it all together. All people see is the finished product and sometimes forget to consider process and what goes into creating it.
