Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Rebecca Davis. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Rebecca thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What were some of the most unexpected problems you’ve faced in your business and how did you resolve those issues?
Construction began in September of 2021 and was supposed to take 4 months to completion.
There were so many challenges along the way as a direct result of the Covid pandemic. There was a labor shortage and it was very difficult to find laborers. We went through many sub-contractors whose pricing was either way out of budget, would not show up or did half the job and then did not show back up.
Inflation was also a major factor affecting the project’s completion. Materials costs had run rampant and caused the project to go way over budget. You always expect a project of this magnitude to run over budget but inflation threatened the project being finished at all. We begged the banks to help, but everyone was experiencing the same issues so there was no additional assistance available. So my husband and I took our last life savings and decided to complete the project on our own.
These factors alone resulted in construction taking a year and a half to complete rather than the initial 4 months that was projected. We finally opened the doors in December of 2022 and from there had to hope that people wanted to come and use our facility.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
We are now known as Platinum Wellness Spa, formerly known as Platinum Beauty Bar & Spa. We got into this business because of the necessity for more amenities in our area. My husband and I have been entrepreneur for over 20 years with multiple businesses. We actually sold one of our businesses and retired. Retirement was not for us. So he embarked on another business venture, while I wanted to open a luxury massage/nail salon in our area. And that is where Platinum was born. I did not envision anything of this magnitude; but here we are.
We provide all types of wellness services. We offer massages, facials and amenities such as saunas, jacuzzis and an oxygen bar, We also offer complete nail services, hair services and have now established med spa services such as corrective facials performed by our clinical aesthetician and IV hydration performed by our nursing team. Additionally, we offer private chef meal service which is catered for each guest. We are on the path to offering facial injectables such as Botox and fillers. In the near future we hope to offer acupuncture and chiropractics. We are truly a one-stop-shop for all things beauty and wellness. In these trying times, everyone needs wellness; even more now than ever. We get so busy with our lives, families and jobs that we do not realize that we are burning ourselves out. We all need to invest in ourselves and give ourselves the relaxation and rejuvenation that we need and deserve.
One of the things that sets us apart is that we are black owned. It scared me to say that at one time; but now I own it and am proud to say that I am a person of color doing exceptional things. I am proud of all that we have accomplished in the face of adversity. I want potential clients to know that we strive to provide the ultimate experience. From our services to our customer service, we want to wait on you hand and foot while you are in our facility and want you to leave feeling revived and rejuvenated; no matter who you are.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
There was a time when many of our practitioners moved on to other jobs all at the same time. This was a scary time for me as I had no idea what to do. As an owner, I cannot do all of these services myself, We rely on others to carry the services out. So we re-built the team one by one; and now we have a team who is unmatched. They truly care about our guests and they love what they do, and it shows. Suffice it to say, things might be scary sometimes. You may not know what the outcome will be. Maybe they might not be as scary if you could see the end result or know what the turnout will be. Sometimes it’s better to let go and let God lead…

We’d appreciate any insights you can share with us about selling a business.
I have sold a business. It was a very profitable, yet stressful one that was in business for over 20 years. And even though we used attorneys to facilitate the sale, the purchaser still defaulted and never paid all of the money owed to us. The attorney that we used to sue the purchaser never even filed the paperwork and was later disbarred for fraud. We never got paid. Moral of the story, do your research but also, rely on your gut instinct, trust yourself and your intuition. We knew that this was not the right deal for us but we were so desperate to make the stress of that business go away that we did it anyway. You know if it is the right time and the right person.
