We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Rebecca Collett. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Rebecca below.
Rebecca, appreciate you joining us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
I knew something had to change. I was doing my dream job, but my life felt like a nightmare.
In 2020 I was the Managing Editor at a Lowcountry TV station. It was the only work I ever wanted to do. But I had three small children and I felt like life was rushing by and I wasn’t able to enjoy the job or my family anymore. I carried our insurance policies and the most steady workload. My husband is also a business owner. SO it was such a huge risk to walk away from a career I’d built through my 20s and into my 30s.
I knew it was necessary to leave my corportant job to start my own business, but I didn’t know how it was going to work. So many questions swirled in my mind. Could I actually run a business? Would any clients want to work with me? Could I actually do the job?
When I first launched my business, Collett Media, I took any job that came my way. I was so glad for each opportunity. As I’ve grown from these humble beginnings, I’m now able to pick which jobs I want and with whom I work.
Looking back it was a wild decision.
We had three kids under 4 and no idea how we were going to make up my income.
I’ve been so blessed, and I’m so thankful for the support of my clients and their belief in me and my team.
Rebecca, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Collett Media is a boutique public relations and video production company. That means we help our clients navigate the best ways to communicate their message. We handle newsletters, social media, media pitching, and website development.
I’m so proud that I have a diverse team- including creatives, a veteran, a retired public servant. Each of the people on my team brings something special and I think my clients can feel that when they work with us.
I’m also thrilled that I get to use the many connections from growing up in the region and working in the local media to help my clients share their messages. Sometimes that means calling on my friends in the media to cover a story and other times that means connecting clients to someone specific in my larger network.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Building a trusted network through a solid reputation is the most important thing to me in business. That means coming with my A -game and serving others. I have found when I take care of people around me, business will take care of itself.
Building trust with others is all about being authentic, doing the best job possible, and communicating honestly.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
I have high expectations for my team, but I also treat them with grace and understanding. I know I’m not perfect and I make mistakes. Being fair and gracious to my team and trying to see things from their position is part of building trust and high morale.
