We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Rebecca Bennett. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Rebecca below.
Rebecca, appreciate you joining us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
In time I was able to earn a full time living. At first I exhibited at local coffee shops, and other alternative spaces. The work was received well and I earned my first bit of income. It gave me the confidence to approach art consultants, designers, licensing agents, and galleries. Joining an artist co-op, engaging with the local art collectives and non-profits helped to build my community of like minded creatives. I am now in my twentieth year of working as a full time artist. It is important to remember even now that the art world is full of ups and downs. Ride the waves with confidence.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Landing in Austin, TX I ventured into the world of being a full time visual artist. I have always had a love of art and was part of the art community throughout my life. In 2002, I had a space of my own to create and experiment. What evolved was a body of work I was happy to share. When I joined an artist co-op I was able to see first hand the gallery and business of art selling process. Integrity and trust are two very important aspects. I feel proud that I’ve run my business with such qualities. Whether working with a gallery, art consultant, or residential client I made a point to make them feel at ease, respond quickly with requests, and keep the process transparent.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Seeing my work in its new space is an endorphin rush. Watching a client be excited about living with their new piece of work is exceptionally rewarding. The flush of a persons face when they have a visceral reaction to my work keeps me going. These are the very highlights of being a visual artist.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Art in all forms is an integral part of our human existence. In times of societal stress it can bring light to issues, express emotion, or allow a space to contemplate and decompress. The best way to create a thriving ecosystem is to buy artwork, support local non profits, support local, and recognize its value.
