Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Reagan Rothe. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Reagan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Be self-motivated and understand that not every day is going to be full of energy and passion. There are ups and downs, but after each down, are you excited to start again? How do you know you picked the right business? I think it’s as simple as how quickly you return to loving what you do and how excited you are about it. For instance, there are days where I’m not as motivated to work or a little burned out, but after that day, I always return to wanting more… doing what I love. I think that’s the key.

Reagan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I was an author first, and through my experiences, I wanted to create something (which ended up being a publishing house) that helped other writers and their journey to being published. The goal was to be transparent, direct, and create a family-like environment in an industry where that wasn’t always prevalent. I’m very proud of Black Rose Writing and our authors, so many of them are bestsellers and not just authors to us, but friends. We recently just had our first AuthorFest, and it was a huge success, meeting many of our authors for the first-time in person and doing our best to help them.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
When Black Rose Writing was in its very early years, 2006-2010 range, the publishing industry introduced eBooks. As I have always done my best to be flexible in business (not being too stubborn in old ways and getting left behind), we were quick to transition to publishing eBooks alongside our paperbacks and hardcovers. However, there was a moment when eBooks become so hot, I thought we might shift to becoming a digital-only publisher, where printed books would become a thing of the past – a collector’s item only. But as we see in many new trends, eBooks cooled off, printed books bounced back, and they both found their own market. This also happened again with audiobooks, and they are work very well and offer readers/listeners different formats to consume wonderful stories.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
On social media, we’ve always tried to filter our content to promote our books and authors, but not to the extent of “Buy, buy, buy.” Anyone wanting to really connect to their audience on social media should be personal, authentic, and post relevant material. Don’t ask followers to buy your product or support your business if you aren’t actively doing the same for them or providing them with real entertainment. Being fake on social media doesn’t work well. Be yourself, connect with your followers and people you follow, and engage with them in a real fashion.
