We recently connected with Reagan Link and have shared our conversation below.
Reagan, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
If you would’ve asked me this question 10 years ago, I would’ve given you a completely different answer. I used to think that success was equivalent to money, fame, and popularity. I thought, if I aim to achieve those three things. then I would be happy in my life. While it is possible and helpful to find financial success, I think real success comes from within. It comes from being happy in your life. It comes from the lack of need for validation or pleasing others. Success is confidence in who you are at your core. Success is finding the light in even the darkest moments. Success is love, happiness, and peace in your mind. You don’t really need money, fame or popularity to have a successful life. There is no milestone that deems who is successful and who is not. It’s all about how you view yourself, and how you view your life. Life is very short, and you only have one life to live.. it’s up to you to enjoy it.
Reagan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
If you have no idea who I am.. Hi! I’m Reagan Link, you can find me on social media @reaganlinkartistry .. I’m a traveling hairstylist and content creator. I’ve been in the industry for 10 years now, and I specialize in creative hairstyling. I also work as a celebrity hairstylist, creating red carpet looks, working on photo shoots for brands and talent, and traveling the world doing hair. I recently moved abroad last year and began traveling for work full-time in an effort expand my artistry all over the world. After almost 10 years in the industry, my current goal is to create my own path. I started my career sweeping the salon floor and handing bobby pins to other hairstylists. I’ve worked very hard to build a name for myself and I want to start a new journey for myself at this point. I’m going in a new direction for once; my own direction. I have so many exciting projects I am working on this year, I’m ready to take you guys with me into the unknown.. Ultimately, I just want to share my new life experiences in an effort to inspire others. I want to help the next generation of artists find their creative passion, and do what they love every day. There are no rules in this industry, and there are no existing footsteps that you need to follow to find success. I truly believe that when you create your own path, nothing can stop you. Follow along my new journey on social media, and I’ll show you what I mean!
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I used to think that once I achieved a certain goal, then I would “make it” and everything in my life would become easier.. I truly believed that if I got to a certain level of success, that everything else will just fall into place. I spent YEARS trying to run through life as quickly as I could.. always chasing the next thing because “once I get that thing then I will be happy and everything will work out.” It wasn’t until I achieved most of my goals that I realized I was still the same inside. What I’ve learned from this is that no achievement or level of success will bring you the happiness that you’re seeking. You might get a temporary boost, but then what? When you move through life so fast, you don’t even really have time to enjoy the accomplishments. You don’t need to achieve a certain level of success to then become happy. True happiness comes from living in the moment. It comes from taking the pressure off of yourself to do everything all at once. Happiness comes from paying attention to the little things around you, a bird or a flower or a butterfly. It comes from spending time with the people that you love, making memories that last a lifetime. Happiness is the result of doing the things that scare you, and really sitting in that fear until it doesn’t scare you anymore. To find happiness, you need to be present. If you are always rushing through life, these things will simply pass you by. It’s a decision you make when you wake up every single day to try and look at the positive. It’s your decision to make the most of every day. If you try your best to be happy every day, it won’t always be easy, but you will be able to find joy, even in the toughest moments. Real richness doesn’t come from success or money, it comes from within. It’s already there inside you, you can stop chasing it.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
To be honest, the most rewarding part about my career as an artist is simply the fact that I have a career and make a living as an artist. Let me explain… Growing up I was told that being a creative was not a “real job” and that I would never find success if I pursued my dream. While this couldn’t be further from the truth, I knew I had a difficult journey ahead if I wanted to bring my dreams into fruition. I spent years barely getting by, working for very little money, and even doing hair for free in an effort to network and master my craft. Those years were extremely difficult, some of the darkest times in my life, but ultimately it was all well worth it. Those experiences helped shape me into the artist I am today. It pushed me into places I would have never otherwise gone. It allowed me to build the life I have now, and inspired me to continue to work towards my future, a life of peace and happiness.. I get to wake up every day and create, all on my own terms, and I can get paid for it?! I started with nothing but a dream, and now I have the ability to do what I love every single day. That is the biggest reward.
