Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Re DeVine . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Re, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I was 11-years-old when I knew that I had to be on stage. All my life, I grew up around music but I had horrible stage fright all through elementary school. It was bad like I would get physically sick and just freeze up. Until I saw The Beyoncé Experience Live. Every time I tell this story, people laugh but it’s a true story! I was watching the concert over Christmas break and at the end of show, Beyoncé sings Irreplaceable. It’s this huge end of the show moment, the energy is high, the band is playing, Bey is doing all these vocal acrobatics, and I am in tears! I don’t know what happened at that moment but something just clicked and I knew I had to be on stage then. I started telling myself “it’s time”, you have all of this music and all of these songs in your head and now it’s time for you to share it and literally 2 months later, I was playing instruments and recording songs.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My passion for music started at a very early age. I can’t remember a time where there wasn’t music playing in my house whether that be albums playing or my parents on instruments. I’m a military brat and a PK so I grew up singing in church but moved around a lot.
Everyone in my family from my great grandparents on down either sang or played an instrument. My parents conducted music workshops all over the country so I was always at a rehearsal. Nobody knew I was paying attention to what was going on. I knew every note of every song they ever taught and that’s how I developed my ear. Still to this day I can sing and play some of those songs note for note.
For my 12th birthday, my parents got me my first keyboard. I started learning how to play all of my favorite songs, songs we sang at church. I started sitting in with the band at certain services. I started writing my own songs and singing but no one knew that I could really sing. My 2 younger siblings and I formed a singing group and when we got our first engagement. That’s when everyone found out that I could sing.
From about 12 to 15 me and my sisters performed at churches in St. Joe, Wichita, and KCMO. At 16, I realized that I really loved R&B music and I talked to my mom about it, she said as long as I kept it clean she had no problem. I dropped my first single at 17, it did well. I got gigs but I felt like I was doing everybody else’s sound.
So at 18, Re DeVine was born. I started doing ReMixes, which was me taking popular songs and creating my own versions of them. I started posting them online and performing them on campus when I got to college. From there I started building a following on YouTube and Twitter.
After I graduated from college, I made my performance debut at the DistriKCt Tuesday open mic on the Historic 18th & Vine Jazz District. Since then I’ve performed on various stages across the Kansas City Metro area, Springfield, MO, Tulsa, Ok and many other places both virtually and in-person.
In September 2020, I linked up with T.A. Rell and we became producing partners. A lot of people didn’t know that I was ,writing and producing all of my own music. In 2020, I released my politically charged debut single entitled, “All We Ever Did”. Two months following was the release of my first Christmas EP, “Christmas with Re”. Since then, I’ve been writing, producing, and featured on records with many of my favorite artists.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the moments I get to share with the audience. I remember vividly, my first show after my great grandfather passed away. I took losing him pretty hard and my first gig was maybe a month or so after the funeral. I remember tweeting that day and saying “I am ready to sing tonight, It’s been a rough few weeks and I plan to leave it all on the stage”. The energy in the room was so high that night. I remember the audience singing almost every song word for word. They were engaged, entertained, as artists we feed off of that. We need that in that room.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I started building my audience online by just posting the videos and engaging with people that have the same music taste. I’m known for mashups and my ReMixes so when I started posting popular songs with my spin on it, people started requesting other songs and sharing them. So just being in consistent in your content and posting what your followers are asking for then dropping your original music and content in between.
