Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Rayner Gabriel. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Rayner thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I’m a performing artist based in South Florida. I graduated from the New World School of the Arts in 2011, earning my B.F.A. in Theatre and Acting. After finishing school, I managed to secure roles and perform on stage. However, the local industry and the limited opportunities weren’t enough to sustain a living. This prompted me to explore alternative income streams that would still utilize my skills. In 2012, I found my way to a Dubbing Studio and became a studio director.
In my nine years there, I advanced to department head and also served as the lead artistic director. I made the most of every opportunity to learn from my colleagues. I sought professional development, which allowed me to grow as a voice actor, director, audio engineer, and corporate leader, all while nurturing my passion for acting, voice-over work, and music.
In 2021, I decided I’d reached my limit in terms of learning and contribution at the company, so I took a leap of faith and left my comfortable position to establish “Rayner Gabriel LLC.” Leveraging the relationships I’d built and the skills I’d acquired, I secured work with various studios along the East Coast and even collaborated with some international companies. Additionally, I began creating and releasing music under the name “Rayner G.”
Since then, I’ve been fortunate enough to continue booking projects, fund my music career, and maintain my independence. Today, I proudly identify as a stage and TV actor, audiobook narrator, voice artist, script adapter, director, songwriter, and musical artist. While there are certainly ups and downs and moments of fear about staying on this path, and though my company lacks benefits and the work may not always be as steady as a full-time corporate job, I am genuinely happy. This journey has allowed me to better understand myself both as a professional and a creative, which makes any financial insecurity worthwhile. It truly makes a difference when I lay my head down to sleep each night.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My journey into the performing arts began in my youth. My parents encouraged me to follow my passion by joining the drama department at my high school, and I continued my theatrical training in college. I had the opportunity to do voice-over work at an early age, which introduced me to that aspect of the industry as a child actor. While the work was sporadic, I became familiar with studio environments. When I sought more consistent opportunities, I turned to the studios.
Upon becoming a studio director, I quickly realized there was a wealth of knowledge to acquire. I dedicated myself to learning—arriving early, staying late, and asking audio engineers about their techniques. I seized every opportunity to gain insights and enhance my value within the company, which led to rapid advancement. I embraced every task and went above and beyond, all in pursuit of becoming a better professional and securing higher compensation.
When I founded Rayner Gabriel LLC, I recognized how much I had absorbed during my time at the company. My leadership skills seamlessly translated to my organization and client interactions, distinguishing me from other voice artist candidates. Additionally, my theatre background instilled a strong sense of discipline, and my experience as an audio engineer facilitated effective communication with creatives who weren’t performers.
I discovered that my stamina in the booth was remarkably high compared to others, a realization that struck me while working with newer clients. My mindset was clear and peaceful, and I enjoyed being my boss, which helped me maintain a genuinely positive attitude—making me enjoyable to work with.
The same applies to my musical endeavors; producers are often impressed by my discipline and consistency regarding workflow and commitments. What I take the most pride in is my ability to be efficient while remaining true to myself. Much of our work as artists revolves around “being who we are,” yet clients often prioritize practicalities and numbers when it matters most. I hold this balance in high regard. While I’ve worked on exciting projects and led a life I’m proud of, what I value most is my confidence in both my artistry and professionalism, as well as the work I choose to create.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Without a doubt, self-expression is at the core of my art. The ability to absorb, interpret, and comprehend my own experiences, then transform that understanding into something that makes others feel recognized, serves as my greatest motivation. It’s why I do what I do.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
As an only child growing up, I turned to art for direction. I found solace in cartoons, music, comic books, video games, and fantasy novels, drawing support from the characters in the stories that resonated with me. Today, I aim to offer that same support to those who, like my younger self, are searching for what they need. While performing brings joy and receiving praise for a job well done or being told a song “slaps” is exhilarating, nothing compares to being a source of comfort for someone who feels alone in their experience. That truly means everything to me.
