We recently connected with Rayne Parvis and have shared our conversation below.
Rayne, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
After a career transition from a stand-up comedian at 32, I was officially a “personal stylist”. Not because, I had a track record or former training, but because I decided to be. That’s one of the awesome and dare I say ‘scary” things about this industry. You can wake up and say, “I’m a stylist!”. I often look back at my first business name and marketing materials with a pet dog on it, and cringe. Ha! In 2010, after a few complimentary closet edits with friends and family and the execution of a website, I started to do outreach to companies who were part of the niche I had a heart for…matchmakers! Being in my early 30’s I had a plethora of friends who were transitioning to looking for a “good time” to looking for a soul mate to live and cherish life with. I had given them my two cents for years. I knew how hard it is to make a great first impression and in retrospect how easy it was to bypass someone that had potential because of their ill-fitting clothes and dated shoes. I mean, hello!, I was single in LA too.
My first official pay check came from a top matchmaking company. After I declined a receptionist position 6 months prior when I was still figuring out what I wanted to do with my life, I reached out and told the interviewee about my new business. I asked if there were any members that could use a style refresh for their dates and the rest is history. The owner took a liking to me and put me on the payroll! It was awesome, they referred so many beautiful souls and I will always be grateful for them. As it was through their referrals that gave me so much experience in evolving into the top rated stylist I am today. I felt legit!

How did you build your audience on social media?
I am currently re-building my Instagram account after being wrongly disabled…so I understand the frustrations and hopeless feeling of just starting when everyone else seems years of posts and millions of followers ahead of you. The good news is; you don’t need tons of followers to make an impact or to make money! Yay! After I had all of my followers wiped away I started posting 3 days a week with IG stories everyday. Although growing your followers in what ever platform you choose can be daunting you can still positively impact your few followers you do have and attract future clients who will sign up for your service or buy your product. Best advice be consistent and don’t worry about being perfect. Perfect feeds and videos are so out of style.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
My best advice while pursuing your side-hustle is to make your full-time job in the arena of your side-hustle. For example, can you can get a day-job to help build your personal business? For example, when I planned on having a baby, I couldn’t afford to not work and wanted great insurance so I wouldn’t have to stress about getting new clients during this time span. I decided to get a full-time job that had incredible benefits but still allowed me to style and do my craft. I kind of did it backwards while not giving up. I was freelance but still wasn’t making consistent money and wasn’t ready to give up. Getting a styling job at a top fashion retailer allowed me to continue to make great connections that would hire me outside of my “day job”, work on my craft, and I was able to build my reputation, increase my knowledge and sustained me through out not only my pregnancy and maternity leave but the pandemic as well. When I quit my day job, I had a full book of clients, impeccable reputation, and all the connections. My point, can you think of a full-time job that would work hand-in-hand with your side hustle? If so, go after it, get it, and work it till you’re ready to leave on your own.
