We caught up with the brilliant and insightful RAYLR a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
RAYLR, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Our Debut EP “Chasing Something” was a very meaningful piece of work for us. This was a culmination project of multiple years of dreaming and a lot of hard work. Two of the tracks, “Safe One” and “What We’re Here For” were catalyst tracks for the band. They were the songs that got us all together and eventually turned us into a band. The project led to many firsts for us and has been incredible to look back on the process we underwent in its creation.
RAYLR, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
We are a band that makes music reflective of a variety of musical backgrounds. Some of our biggest influences include The 1975 and John Mayer. We’ve grown up playing different musical environments, everything from CCM and rock music to modern reggae and jazz. This contributes to a unique quality I believe we bring to the table, which is not being strictly confined to a single sound or genre. It is more fun to pull from all of these backgrounds and create our own sound that showcases our roots while making something new. We’re still a young group, but in these first two years, we’re most proud of finishing this EP. It was a long process in which we learned a ton, and I’m so excited for these songs to be out and shared with everyone.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
RAYLR is a band with 6 members. That is a lot of people to be working on something so special and so creative with. Each member is a very creative and driven person with abundant talent. We are all great friends and created “Chasing Something” while we were all living together. It’s a combination of many factors that became difficult to always manage well. Expectations, schedules, emotions, commitment, differing ideas and vision. We faced many challenges and had to work very hard to learn how to grow through these things. The easy option many times would have been to quit. But these songs and this project would not be what it is without each member of the band. We all came out the other side of this first record having learned and grown so much, both creatively and in our friendships.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I believe the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is getting to experience how other people receive and interact with your work. As a musical artist and as a band, we definitely find the most reward when people have emotional responses to our music. Whether it’s dancing, smiling, singing along, crying, even giving someone the space to enter deep thought while listening to our music, the emotional response gives life to the work we spend so much time on.
