Rayjene, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?

I must say that I truly am happier as a business owner!

I’ve worked traditional jobs since the age of 17. From the start, I’ve always been an extremely hard worker—a trait I inherited from my father. But, don’t get me wrong; the skills that I’ve acquired over my 10+ years of working have definitely helped me to become the business owner that I am today.

Way before I ever got hired at my first job, I had already created multiple little jobs (side hustles) for myself. You see, I’ve always had an entrepreneurial mindset.

From making jewelry and selling it at my church, to doing nails in my backyard for $20. I’ve always been business-minded.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

My name is Rayjene Pickett, and I am the owner of Gifted Hands Hair Braiding, a home-based braiding and natural hair styling salon.

I specialize in working with textured hair types, providing various braid and twist styles.

I discovered my love for braiding around the age of 12 and have been practicing and perfecting my craft ever since.

I enjoy being able to express myself through styling hair. It truly is a creative release for me. In addition to that I love making my clients feel and look their best!

My brand is all about making sure my clients feels seen, heard, and valued. I am truly passionate about what I do, being able to earn income is just an added plus.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?

I actually started my business using money that my parents had sent me for my birthday!

It was truly a surprise but couldn’t have come at a more perfect time.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?

I know that consistency has helped me and is helping me to build my reputation within my market.

I hold myself to a high standard, and I make it my mission to show up as my best self for each and every client, regardless of whether they’re spending $30 or $300, they receive the same level of professionalism and respect from me.
