We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rayjean Morgan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Rayjean, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
My mission is to increase access to veterinary care. This started from working in the veterinary field, and seeing so many pets stressed before, during, and or after their veterinary visit. Going to a veterinarian can often be a stressful event for the pet and the pet owner. As a technician working in hospitals, I often help with and see the schedule packed with nail trims, medication demonstrations, and other things that could be safely performed at home. I believe that my goal to provide veterinary nursing services at home will benefit in so many ways. Cats and dogs can be in a low-stress environment, at home, where they can recover quickly and escape to a favorite hiding place after a nail trim. They can sit on their favorite chair or blanket during a medication administration. Helping pets in this way will increase awareness of the importance of caring for pets and will share with the community what a veterinary technician is and what they can do for pets. Offering this service will reduce the effects that chronic stress can have on a pet. Chronic stress can lead to heart issues, urinary issues (especially in cats), and flare-ups of chronic diseases. One of the hardest things is when we have to say goodbye to our beloved pet, and reducing stress in this way will help give our pets more time to live an enjoyable life. That is my mission, to help pet’s live as long as they can with their owners by helping them get the care that they need to thrive.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a Registered Veterinary Technician. Being a veterinary technician is similar to being a nurse for people. I love being involved in the medical care of cats and dogs. My career is so special because I have the opportunity to help and advocate for patients that don’t have a voice and need help.
I started a business where I provide at home veterinary care for pets. As a registered technician, I can not diagnose or prescribe medication, but I can help give prescribed medications, help pet owners understand diet recommendations, and perform care that will help maintain a good quality of life such as matted fur removal, nail trims, and ear cleanings. I love what I do and I love even more to be able to see pets at home, getting the care that they need, in a low stress-environment.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
The easiest way for me to keep in touch with my clients is through email or text message. The business I started is my side hustle. I work full time at a veterinary clinic so it can be very hard at times to communicate and give my clients the time they deserve over the phone. When I’m off from my full-time job, I am usually seeing patients at their homes, and the last thing they need is a phone ringing during their treatment, causing more stress and distracting me. I do my best to call clients when I do have spare time, but email helps me reach out to more clients, more often, with detailed information. I can then call them and answer any questions they have when I can. I do my best to foster loyalty by keeping the appointments scheduled, maintaining professionalism, and being honest about when I need to make changes in order to give myself rest. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that I can’t be fully present for others if I don’t take care of myself first and I constantly remind myself of that.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
I am grateful to work at a veterinary hospital that supports my business and my mission. Word of mouth has been the most effective way to share my business with the community. When a client sees how well things go at home, they spread the word to their neighbors and friends who have pets. By sharing my services with pets I work with in the hospital every day, the word spreads and my clientele grows. The hospital where I work has seen how this service benefits them. They are able to see more sick cases when their nurses are less occupied with nail trims and medication administration and can increase owner compliance by offering a service that can make compliance easier for them.
