We were lucky to catch up with Ray Padilla recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ray, appreciate you joining us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard
Yes. One of the main things we pride ourselves with most is our decision to not be like your typical law office that wishes to and/or attempts to corner the market and seeks to be hired by as many clients as possible. In other words, we don’t believe that more is always better. Yes, we do want to help as many deserving people as possible; however, we know that there’s a point where it becomes counterproductive and ultimately the clients suffer because their lawyers tried to take on too much.
We always tell our clients that we want to help not hurt them and we mean it. This means that sometimes while we wish we could help, we tell clients that we are not the right law office for them. This may be because we either do not focus in a particular area of law and another law office would be better able to help them, or because we may not have the time to give them the representation that they deserve.
By keeping a manageable case load, we are able to better represent our clients, communicate with them more often (my clients and I text all the time), and more often than not we resolve their cases sooner.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m originally from Phoenix, AZ. I’m the son of two wonderful and hard working parents who immigrated to this country over 40 years ago from Mexico. I moved to San Diego to attend law school and ultimately opened my practice in San Diego.
Since a young age I knew I wanted to be a lawyer and wear a suit everyday. I didn’t really know what being a lawyer entailed early on, but over the years I just knew that I wanted to stand up for people and help them fight “the man.” Flash forward to now, I rarely get to wear a suit, but I do help my clients fight for their rights on a daily basis.
I fight against insurance companies and corporations that have wronged our clients and refuse to accept responsibility. Our main focus is helping people injured in car accidents.
The answer to the question of what sets us apart from others, goes back to our belief that in order to be successful and truly help people, we don’t need to do all areas of law and take on as many clients as possible. We focus on car accidents, and we do it well.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Doing good work, understanding what our clients are going through, and going to bat for them. We spend little to no money in advertising. We represent good and deserving people as best we can. We often receive phone calls from new clients saying they were referred to us by a previous client. That is one of the best feelings because it’s confirmation for us that we are doing good work if prior clients are telling their friends and family members that they need to hire us.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Chop Wood, Carry Water. I have read that book about 8 times and have listened to it on audible about 5 times. I’ve gifted it to friends and recommend it any chance I get. It is such an easy read but every page is filled with simple yet extremely useful advice both for personal and professional growth.
When I’m at a crossroads and don’t know what to do either in life or a case, I’ll often read one chapter of the book and either it leads me to the answer or more importantly, it leads me to action.
